Ernest Vineyards Pinot Noir The Wrangler Grand Vent Vineyard Petaluma Gap 2017
Co-owner Todd Gottula is a passionate Burgundy lover. Together with partner, Erin Brooks, and winemaker, Joseph Ryan, they are quietly making killer Sonoma pinots named after Todd’s grandfather, Ernest. Todd and Erin built out a state-of-the-art winemaking facility called Grand Cru, where luminaries, like Donald Patz of Patz and Hall make his Maritana wines, and ex-Marcassin and Williams Selyem winemaker Chris Pittenger crafts his gros ventre wines. Needless to say, the exchange of ideas that happens and techniques that happen at a facility like this is a “rising tide lifts all boats” sort of scenario that Ernest takes full advantage of.
Joseph Ryan is a humble and exceptionally talented winemaker who cuts his teeth at places like Flowers and Alysian. He makes site-specific, terroir-transparent wines that are light on extraction and alcohol, but heavy on flavor: “I work with the grapes as opposed to trying to make them work for me.” That comes through in the glass with nuanced, thought-provoking, and superbly crafted pinot noirs.
We can’t gush enough about the quality and precision here -- this is just gloriously expressive with maybe a touch more ripeness than the 2016 version for those of you that were lucky enough to grab some. We love the perfumed blood orange, juniper, wild herbs, spiced cherry, Campari, and redwood forest floor aromas that we get here...a truly unique wine from the wind-swept Petaluma Gap. The flavors are bright yet deep and resonate with all the savory and spicy nuance that nod to the great wines of Dujac or the wines from RAEN.

PAIRING IDEAS: As we head into fall, there is nothing better than a savory vegetable hash to pair with bright pinot noir. Check out a parsnip and turnip hash with Pancetta, bell pepper, tomato and onion.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We’re thinking you should dive into some John Prine's “Summer’s End” for this. Expertly crafted songs do pair well with expertly crafted wines after all!
