RAEN Pinot Noir Sea Field Fort Ross-Seaview 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 James Suckling -
This is really refined with black tea, rose petals, orange and blue fruit. It’s medium-bodied with wild-strawberry and forest-floor flavors. Medium-bodied with great vibrancy and beautiful tannins running through the center palate, which is stitched into the wine. Long and true. 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Subtle and energetic. Better after 2025.

RAEN Pinot Noir Sea Field Fort Ross-Seaview 2019

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

By now, you savvy folks know the RAEN (pronounced “rain” if you were wondering) project, so we'll keep it brief. Just recently started in 2013, the fourth-generation vintners and brothers, whose father is Tim Mondavi and grandchildren of Robert Mondavi, both admired the hills of the Sonoma Coast for decades, and recognized the potential to yield whole-cluster pinot noirs of incredible elegance, and length.

This wine is intensely concentrated and even a bit backward right now, in the best way. So much tightly wound complexity here…just a wow of a wine! Carlo and Dante love whole cluster pinot noir (100% in fact) and raise the wines in mostly neutral wood. There is a wildness and vivacity here that is super intriguing and is constantly changing with air. A wine that is sure to drink well for 20 years with ease.

It’s easy to say “Burgundian” because they truly feel that way, but the project is also about organic production, sustainability and restoring pollinator communities, too. The farming goes far beyond organic and biodynamic, into regenerative farming, which attempts to rehabilitate the vineyards, focusing on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, and increasing resilience to climate change, among other things. Carlo is also involved in the first ever autonomous electric tractor that he uses in his vineyards called "Monarch Tractor".

Super-limited, a legend in the making perhaps! Get it while we have it!

PAIRING IDEAS: For near-term drinking, we’d go with a simple roasted chicken (or duck if you’re really more ambitious). For a chicken, use the Zuni Cafe (in SF) method that we love, esp. if crisp skin is your jam. Recipe here, but basically it’s as simple as planning ahead and rubbing your chicken down with salt 2 or 3 days ahead of cook day, and letting it sit in the fridge. Easy, and it works brilliantly on turkey, too.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We’re getting back into old Madness. Just play the whole “One Step Beyond” album, over and over. "Chipmunks Are Go"!

About the Producer

The story of RAEN began in 2013 with brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. The fourth-generation vintners and brothers, whose father is Tim Mondavi and grandchildren of Robert Mondavi. They both admired the hills of the Sonoma Coast for decades, recognizing the potential to yield whole-cluster pinot noirs of incredible elegance, and length. RAEN (pronounced "rain") is their ethos, representing a dedication to Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally and reminding us that rain becomes wine in the vineyard every year. The Monarch Challenge is Carlo's new project that attempts to bring awareness to clean farming pracices and restore pollinator communities. There is also a cool sustainable, self driving tractor in production to help with vineyard cultivation. Our Royal St. Robert Cuvee is named in honor of our grandfather, who taught us the art of winegrowing and to be comitted to excellence.
