RAEN Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert Sonoma Coast 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 James Suckling -
The aromas of strawberry and raspberry with conifer and hints of bark are impressive. Full-bodied, but so reserved and linear with super long, tightened tannins that melt into the wine. 100% whole cluster. Drinkable now, but much better to wait a year or three.

The farming here is what sets these wines apart. You've probably heard the old adage that wine is made in the vineyard, and that is especially true with these phenomenal wines. The vineyards are farmed organically and meticulously, then the grapes are fermented whole cluster on native yeast and brought up in neutral barrel. Carlo has become one of the foremost experts on sustainable, organic, biodynamic and regenerative farming practices in the entire world. He has presented alongside wineries like DRC, BIllecart-Salmon, Chateau Lafite and Palmer, and Alvaro Palacios. Needless to say, these are wines with extreme respect for the environment and are on par with the best in the world.

About the Producer

The story of RAEN began in 2013 with brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. The fourth-generation vintners and brothers, whose father is Tim Mondavi and grandchildren of Robert Mondavi. They both admired the hills of the Sonoma Coast for decades, recognizing the potential to yield whole-cluster pinot noirs of incredible elegance, and length. RAEN (pronounced "rain") is their ethos, representing a dedication to Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally and reminding us that rain becomes wine in the vineyard every year. The Monarch Challenge is Carlo's new project that attempts to bring awareness to clean farming pracices and restore pollinator communities. There is also a cool sustainable, self driving tractor in production to help with vineyard cultivation.
