Chateau Le Prieure Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Vinous -
The 2018 Le Prieuré is all class, just as it was en primeur. Silky, perfumed and light on its feet, the 2018 is a fabulous example of how refined Saint-Émilion can be. Once again, I am so impressed by the wine's freshness and vitality. Sweet red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint and cinnamon all build over time, but what stands out most is the wine's exceptional balance and harmony. Technical Director Penelope Godefroy has done a magnificent job at Le Prieuré since taking over a few years ago. The 2018 is superb, and an incredible value.
95 Decanter -
An utterly gorgeous wine, rippling with freshness and hidden power. It has an amazing texture with notes of freshly cut herbs and flowers by the armful. Seductive, concentrated but joyful, I love this - it's the best they have made here so far in my opinion.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Le Prieure prances out of the glass with flamboyant scents of rose oil, cinnamon toast, ground cloves and cedar chest over a core of Morello cherries, wild blueberries and plum preserves. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with impressive energy and tension, featuring finely grained tannins to support the red and black fruit flavors, finishing long and fragrant. Give it a couple of years more for the oak to fully integrate, and drink it over the next 18+ years.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

"Gorgeous", "all class", "seductive", "flamboyant”...all words from the pros, and we could not agree more. For us, this drinks like something twice the price -- closer to one of the Pavie wines, maybe. But this is $64.95! Wow! Load up!

Owned since 2020 by the owners of Chateau Calon-Segur in St. Estephe, and crafted by Technical Director Penelope Godefroy from the high-elevation vineyards (some of the highest in the appellation), this winery is on a wildly successful roll! Definitely underpriced. Have we said that? Beautifully made, with so much intensity and finesse, wrapping up all the concentrated blue fruits in a silky, terrifically harmonious mouthfeel and finish.

Bravo, we say! Read the notes below, and make sure to get a few extra to put in the cellar. You’ll thank your future self!! While it lasts...!

PAIRING IDEAS: Duck confit is the preferred meal with this wine, but if that’s not obtainable, you cannot go wrong with a simple roasted chicken. Throw in some cool mushrooms and carrots, a little red wine, and you’re off to the races.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We're feeling some Fleetwood Mac with this wine! "The Chain" is our favorite of their songs. How about yours?

About the Producer

Chateau Le Pieure dates all the way back to 1696, the more modern era begins in 1897 when the chateau was purchased by Joseph Brisson. Joseph was the one who altered the name to Chateau Le Prieure. The chateau was then purchased in 2020 by the owners of Chateau Calon Segur in St. Estephe. The vineyards are planted 75% to Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc and the average age of the vineyards are 41 years of age. At their peak, the vineyards rise to 89 meters, giving them one of the highest elevations in Saint Emilion.
