Wittmann Aulerde Riesling (Dry) Trocken GG 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
Deep, dark and full of mystery, but with wonderfully ripe mirabelle fruit. What energy and earthy depth at the very long finish. Clearly the best vintage of this wine so far! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.
92-93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2019 Aulerde Riesling GG is enormously chalky and flinty on the rich and spicy yet pure, refreshing, deep and fruity nose. Silky textured, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a complex, structured, very elegant and juicy but linear and persistently mineral dry Riesling with remarkable purity and tension. The tension and grip of the 2019s offer impressive proof that Wittmann more and more manages to make the Aulerde a real Grosses Gewächs. However, the distance to the exceptional Westhofener 1G is smaller than to the Morstein GG.

“The 2019 vintage is the best vintage I have ever tasted for German riesling in my four-decade career. Like James, my career as a wine critic began in the early 1980s. The first German vintage I tasted as young wines was 1983 and I can’t remember a vintage like that – until now. The 2019 wines, from dry to classic style with natural grape sweetness are simply astonishing quality, which means 2019 is one of the greatest vintages of modern times and will be remembered for decades, possibly generations.”

Wittmann, of course, is one of the great producers of Riesling in the entire world. So when one of the great vintages collides with one of the great producers, you know you have our attention. Wittmann's Aulerde GG is superb from start to finish, there is just so much to love here! We love the incisive minerality and citrusy acids that super long, layered finish. Gorgeous!

About the Producer

The Wittmann family has been winegrowers since the 17th century. The family has experienced 350 vintages and over fifteen generations. As early as the year 1990, the Wittmann family had converted all of their vineyards to organic cultivation and in 2004, they were certified Biodynamic. In doing this, Wittmann became one of Germany's organic pioneers.
