La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Giobi 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
This special selection draws its fruit from a 18-hectare parcel with tufo soils, clay and ancient marine deposits. The La Fortuna 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Giobi is fermented in stainless steel and later aged in tonneaux. The wine offers pleasing aromatic intensity and fiber with dark cherry, plum, spice, earth and savory forest floor. It displays ample power on the palate with a compact and tight quality of fruit and a full-bodied approach. The tannins are still tight, and the bottle needs more cellaring. This is a limited release with just 2,000 bottles produced.
95 James Suckling -
Very opulent aromas of ripe plums, sliced peaches, violets and lavender. Full-bodied and very velvety with a beautiful, chewy finish of fruit and cedar. Lots of fruit, yet always in reserve and focused. Try after 2023.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have met and started importing the rockstar-level La Fortuna wines for almost a decade now. They only get better and better, and with the late-release ‘16 Riservas coming out, it is time to get serious! This is a wine for the ages with a towering structure, salivating acids and glorious opulence, all while maintaining Fortuna's signature refinement.

Started in 1907, the entire estate is centered around their centuries old Tuscan farmhouse, where the family has lived for over a century. Around 20 acres of vines are planted between two vineyard sites: one near Fulginiae and the other in the south near Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The northern site is a bit cooler, while the southern vineyards are warmer and each year they blend fruit from both locations. .

We don’t need to tell YOU about 2016. This has the power and finish and depth of the ‘15, but, as everyone will tell you, it has that extra level, that balance and age-worthiness and finesse that are NEXT LEVEL. Less than 2000 bottles made, less than 96 bottles were imported into the USA! Read the reviews below, but know that it is everything you know and love about the incredible La Fortuna wines in spades, and an extremely rare selection to boot.

PAIRING IDEAS: When it comes to Giobi, the man is a master of the Steak Fiorentino, so...gotta do that. Prime ribeye, of course, (tomahawk, anyone?) simply seared, slathered in the best oil you find. Do like Giobi does and throw a rib rack on there, too!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Crank up some Ural Thomas and the Pain – the new single “Gimme Some Ice Cream” is great.

About the Producer

La Fortuna began in 1907, with Angiolino Zannoni, Gioberto's great grandfather, growing seed crops and raising livestock. His son Gino followed suit, taking over in the 1950s at a time when the economic landscape was changing dramatically people were fleeing the land in droves to take manufacturing jobs in the cities. Gino knew he wanted none of that, and so he bought the land his family was farming from the landlord.
