Renzo Seghesio Barolo Pajana Riserva 2013
Yup, just 15 cases. We tried for more...alas, this is a heavily restaurant-allocated wine, so grab it while we have it! Rich, intense, from the powerful ‘13 vintage, this drinks like something far more pricey..!
In Monforte d’Alba, where the Seghesio family has been a force for over a century (Renzo was the mayor of Monforte for 25 years!!), the family owns some amazing property in the coveted Ginestra cru. In fact, Cascina Pajana is small division of the coveted Ginstra cru the family has held since 1900. Renzo came home after college in the late 60s, and started making wine in his parents' garage, and he’s known as the “OG” in Monforte --- “Original Garagista”. He is also an accomplished farmer, scholar, cartographer, and patron of the arts, who helped build an amphitheater in Monforte for concerts. Anyway, sounds like a cool dude we’d like to party with, besides drinking his ultra-fine wines!
A wine from Ginestra, the storied hillside vineyard and THE top cru in the Monforte village, priced anything like this, is UN-REAL, truly, and we BEG you to partake. Perfumey aromatics of round, ripe red and blue fruits mingle with rose petals, warm cigar wrapper, licorice, pressed herbs, tarry earth, black pepper and wafting baking spices. Fine-grained, powerful, but sophisticated tannins grip your cheeks, as this silky, textured wine rewards the palate with a generous mouth-feel, powering to a lingering, resonant, spicy finish. While you can drink this wine upon release with decanting, it will be even better with five years or more in the cellar.
Amazing! While it lasts!
PAIRING IDEAS: For our next carbolicious extravaganza, we’re going to make this Cacio e Pepe Pasta Pie. We love cacio e pepe and recommend it all the time with Nebbiolo...but this is another level! Save it for a serious dinner party!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: This Barolo SINGS with such power and style. It would only make sense to pair it with Adele “Rolling in the Deep”. Power matched with finesse and elegance!
