Pierre Gimonnet Blanc de Blancs Oenophile Non Dose 1er Cru 2010 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Wine Advocate -
Gimonnet's 2010 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Oenophile Non Dosé is the same blend as his cuvée Fleuron this year, but it's disgorged without dosage. Showing beautifully, the wine bursts form the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp orchard fruit, fresh brioche and English walnuts. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, pure and precise, with a deep and elegantly textural core, racy acids and a chalky finish. Gimonnet tells me that he hadn't intended to produce this cuvée in this vintage but discovered just how good his Fleuron bottling was tasting without any dosage just six months ago and forthwith decided to release it under the Oenophile label.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Public Service Announcement: We are expecting some power outages in Napa Valley today because of increased fire danger. But worry not, if you need a source portable electricity, just pop the cork on one of these, supercharge your palate, plug it into your grid.

Ok, joking aside...what a price today! One caveat...we have only about 20 cases. This will fly! A classic, especially for lovers of racy, earthy and minerally “no dosage” bubblies!

Did you know? Gimonnet has been growing and selling grapes in Champagne since at least 1750. After the recession in the 1930s, the family began producing their own wines, quickly rising to fame for their fanatic commitment to quality. Their passion is Chardonnay, and along with the famed Larmandier brand (which they acquired in 1987), they are considered THE experts in “Blanc de Blancs” Champagne, and more increasingly, with low or no dosage wines.

This wine! Gorgeous, precise, wildly energetic and crackling with citrus oils, lemon curd, crushed oyster shells, crisp pears and quince. SO fresh and exhilarating. As we said...very little to go around today, so grab this rarity while we have it! If you didn't know, Gimonnet is also a founding member of the Club Tresors de Champagne (Special Club), and we very quietly added a few cases of their 2014 Special Club to the store. Priced amazingly, of course!

PAIRING IDEAS: Oysters, of course. In lieu of that, for something different and more carb-o-licious, make a classic pork katsu sandwich. Trust us. This hits all the sweet spots - crunch, savory, and minimalist in just the right proportions.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We’re feeling some Fatboy Slim for this wine -- bouncy, lighthearted, danceable, funky, fresh and a bit silly. Puts you in a good mood for sure! “Praise You” for beginners, and “Kalifornia” or “Michael Jackson” for a deeper track!

About the Producer

Since before 1750 the Gimonnet family have been vine growers in the village of Cuis, supplying the great Champagne houses with grapes up until the 1930's recession. As the sales of grapes fell during this prolonged recession, Monsieur Pierre Gimonnet finally decided to take up the challenge of vinifying and commercializing his own harvest. It was a great struggle at first, establishing a clientele who were not, at that time, accustomed to "blanc de blancs" Champagnes, not least from a new small independent producer. The effort finally paid off and today the name of Champagne Pierre Gimonnet et Fils is one of great renown, and highly respected. Pierre Gimonnet built this reputation on the base of his unique and exceptional vineyard, half a century of experience and the uncompromising standards that he imposed upon himself. The estate is now run by Pierre's sons, Michel and Didier, who share the fanaticism of their father for the Gimonnet Champagnes. In 1987 the Gimonnet family acquired the house of Larmandier Pere et Fils based in Cramant. This brought some exceptional vineyards to the Gimonnet enterpise. Although the Larmandier wines are vinified at the Gimonnet cellars in Cuis the cuvees are vinified and aged seperately. Consequently some remarkable Champagnes are produced from the Cramant Grand Cru vineyards, especially the outstanding Larmandier Cramant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs and the exquisite Cramant Grand Cru Special Club. The policy of the estate, from the very beginning, in the true traditions of all great wine makers was to limit the production of grapes in the search of quality, with the ambition to become one of the great specialists of "blanc de blancs" Champagnes.
