The 2018 Syrah Bien Nacido is a dark, beguiling beauty. Purplish/black fruit, spice, lavender, licorice and black pepper give the Bien Nacido a distinctly sepia-toned profile. Time in the glass brings out striking Syrah aromatics, but the 2018 remains a brooding, muscular wine with tons of depth and potent tannins that need time to soften.

Piquant, tart and snappy aromas of underripe berries and plums meet with lavender and crumpled dahlia on the nose of this bottling. The white-pepper, wild-thyme and bay leaf flavors are focused and pure on the palate, where black-plum and more lavender tones make for a fresh, lightly bodied and zesty expression.

The 2018 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from vines in X block planted in 1973 and biodynamically farmed. It has a deep ruby-purple color and a lovely perfume of violets, garrigue and charcuterie with fresh blackcurrant fruit. The palate is grainy, fresh and light on its feet with loads of floral character and a long, lifted finish. 486 cases produced.

Piedrasassi quietly makes a ROCKING good Syrah from the famed BIEN NACIDO Vineyard, and we are incredibly lucky to have scored a bit to offer today. Extremely impressive, serious and ageworthy Syrah from rockstar winemaker Sashi Moorman, wow!

Interestingly, Piedrasassi cultivates grapes and grain for bread in the Central Coast of California. Through bread and wine, they endeavor to tell the stories of the region and its people through the family winery and local bakery. Winemaker Sashi Moorman (probably best known for his many projects with Raj Parr) is a Syrah MASTER, as you’ll find out upon tasting this blockbuster!

PAIRING IDEAS: Lamb chops! It is PERFECT -- just marinate them in GOOD olive oil, good salt (we like smoked Maldon for this dish), pepper, garlic, rosemary, and thyme. Grill and sip and go straight to heaven!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Some deep, soulful BLUES! Try "Migration Blues" by Eric Bibb for something newer, or just go Lightning Hopkins, of course, for the old-school genius!

We primarily cultivate and vinify Syrah, a variety with which winemaker Sashi Moorman has worked for over two decades. Today, the viticultural heritage of the Northern Rhone and the pioneering ethos of the Central Coast equally inform his engagement with Syrah.
