Cresta Velia Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

96+ Jeb Dunnuck -
I loved the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder from barrel and it showed beautifully from bottle. Deep purple-hued, with powerful notes of blackcurrants, leafy herbs, tapenade, chocolate, and bay leaf, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a lush, sumptuous texture, awesome tannins, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. This beautiful Mount Veeder Cabernet will evolve for 20-25 years.
95 Vinous -
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon emerges from a new site on Mt. Veeder that is just beginning to enter production. Inky and explosive, the 2018 possesses off the charts richness. The 2018 captures all the intensity of Veeder, but without the tannins and harsher elements that can penalize Cabernets here. The 2018 is a total turn-on. It is a remarkable effort for a vineyard that was only planted in 2014 and 2015. Don't miss it.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Love the comments from the pros: “The 2018 is a total turn-on", "...possesses off the charts richness", "a lush, sumptuous texture".

Indeed, that is the feeling you will get tasting John Giannini’s Cabernet from a new vineyard on Mount Veeder. If you like light, elegant, minerally wines, then stop reading right now and delete this email! This is a BIG, larger than life wine! John’s day job is running Outpost winery on Howell Mountain, where he makes wine for several exceptional brands under consulting winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, including a LOT of 100-pointers! He knows Cabernet intimately, and Cresta Velia (combining his mother's maiden name Cresta with his grandmother's first name Velia) is his baby. This is an incredible debut effort that is nothing short of impressive in its concentration, fruit intensity and seemingly effortless power.

We are thrilled to have a great price on the debut release, and you will be blown away, promise! Get a few extra to put in the back of the cellar, because your kids will be drinking this one in 2045 and beyond!

PAIRING IDEAS: This wine is so powerful, we seriously think it might be best with a simple, perfect burger with a lot of melted good cheese (some 2+ year old cheddar, smoked gouda, or even some salty, powerful Stilton, if you’re up for it). Heaven!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Check out the funky/cool mostly instrumental grooves of The New Mastersounds. This is a slick, cool background for all your Cab and burger-pounding fun!

About the Producer

Cresta Velia is a tiny boutique producer founded by John Giannini. The name of the winery is a nod to his family - combining his mother's maiden name Cresta with his grandmother's first name Velia. He started in the restaurant business as a server at Scalla's restaurant in San Francisco. This is where his love and appreciation for wine grew. Without a formal education in oenology, he was super passionate about learning as much as he could. It also helped that he met Thomas Rivers Brown, his mentor, who hired him to work in the cellar in 2003. He was soon promoted to Assistant Winemaker at Outpost Winery in 2007. Since then, John has helped craft many of the 100 point wines that have come out of Outpost winemaking facility. And while he continues to be the Assistant Winemaker at Outpost, the next logical step was to become a winemaker in his own right; and so Cresta Velia was born. We are incredibly excited with our first effort from this newly planted site on Mount Veeder and feel fortunate to have started with such a heralded vintage . The 2018 Mt. Veeder is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is made up of clones 685 and 169 that were co-fermented for 14 days. Inky purple and highly aromatic with notes of fresh blueberries, black olives, bakers chocolate and spearmint running the length of the wine
