Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Unique 2016

Rhone Blend  |  France

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

We are in hardcore no-brainer territory today, people. PLEASE read! OK, ok, we are super stoked about this wine (trust us, it’s crazy-delicious, like virtually all 2016 Chateauneufs…) and we only have a bit and HERE IS WHY, let’s get right to the meat on the bone…

The ‘16 “Cuvee Papet” from Olivet, as you probably know, scored 100 points. The “regular” Clos du Mont Olivet scored 93/94 points. THIS bottling that we are so happily presenting to you today, is the “Cuvee Unique” that is made exclusively for North Berkeley Imports, and we are told, contains a high percentage of the wine that didn’t quite make the cut for the Papet (the 100-pointer). SO -- all of that is GOOD, good news. Is it a 95 point wine? 96? We don’t do our own scores (like some other retailers…) and this special bottling is not reviewd, so all we can say is the wine is drop-dead gorgeous, and you’ll know exactly what we mean the moment you pop the cork. The Sabon family makes Chateauneuf in the style we adore, too, not to alcoholic, heavy or thick, they are all about precision and balance and finesse, and in a vintage like this one...well, what we are getting at is that with this killer price, we think this is “case-worthy” to say the least. We all got ours!!

$239.70 a 6-pack DELIVERED!!! $479.40 a 12-pack CASE DELIVERED!

Really, a fantastic deal on a brilliant wine from an already-legendary vintage. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED…! Don’t miss! 100% IN STOCK, of course!

Lastly, two data points -- reviews of the “regular” and “Papet” bottlings from Jeb Dununck (there are also more raves from Vinous, etc, if you want to look around) to give you sense of the style, comments, etc.

Clos du Mont Olivet --- JD94: “The finest base cuvée produced at this estate is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah and the balance Cinsault, all aged in a mix of foudre and older barrels. Beautiful plums, blackberries, garrigue, and marine-like seaweed and iodine notes all give way to a pure, polished, full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has integrated acidity and a great finish. It's a sensational classic cuvée that will keep for 2+ decades.”

Clos du Mont Olivet “Papet” --- JD100: “Another best to date, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet from Thierry Sabon is pure perfection in a glass. More powerful than the classic cuvée, with killer black raspberries, crushed rocks, garrigue, salty minerality, and iodine, it's deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and sexy, yet has building tannin. It's one of those “iron fist in a velvet glove” wines and continued to gain depth and richness every time I went back to the glass. Old-school, traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape doesn’t get any better, and readers should beg, borrow or steal to get a hold of this.”

Don’t wait! Will sell out!

About the Producer

Clos du Mont-Olivet is a true insider’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape domaine. Often described as a beacon of traditionalism, the Sabon family makes Rhone wines that value freshness and elegance over bombastic prowess. Founded in the mid-16th century, the estate today is run by the dynamic and talented Thierry Sabon, and encompasses parcels of mainly 60+ year old vines in the heart of Chateauneuf, with a wath of very old 100+ year old vines as well. The wines are classical in style, with heady, complex aromatics, and ripe, exuberant, garrigue-laden fruit that tastes of the stones that comprise the fascinating soils of the area. Southern Rhone wines rarely speak so clearly and eloquently of their terroir. It has become quite clear that the quality of Clos du Mont-Olivet has never been higher, and the value represented by their extraordinary lineup stands as a bastion of historic Chateauneuf.
