Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Decanter -
Every time I taste Philip Togni's 2013, the more profound it seems. Bursting from the glass with complex aromas of red and black fruit, burning embers, pungent violet, rich cocoa and incipient tobacco leaf, on the palate the wine is incredibly deep, concentrated and three-dimensional. Right now it's shutting down and deserves to snooze for at least a decade before it begins to unful and reveal all its magic. Philip and his daughter Lisa are producing wines that deserve to be recognised as some of the most authoratative, classical Cabernets in all California.
100 Vinous -
A majestic, towering wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is even more striking in bottle than it was from barrel. Deep, unctuous and remarkably vivid for such a big, intense wine, the 2013 simply conquers all of the senses, from the intellectual to the hedonistic. A host of dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice, mint and floral notes meld together in the glass, but the 2013 is a wine to admire for its total sense of completeness. This is easily the greatest young Philip Togni wine I have ever tasted. Simply put, the 2013 is magnificent and one of the wines of the vintage.

About the Producer

Philip Togni planted their first vines near the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley in 1981. Philip Togni's first wines were Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc in 1983, but they have now concentrated their efforts on a very ageworthy Margaux-type blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all grown on the 25 acre parcel where the family lives. "Estate Bottled" is an important definition for Philip Togni, meaning that they grow all the grapes on land they own and make and bottle the wine with their own workers, totally free from outside influences. There are three owners, Birgitta and Philip Togni, recently joined by their daughter Lisa. Birgitta specializes in the vineyard. Philip is a former student of Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux where he earned the Diplôme National d’Oenologie many years ago while working as assistant Régisseur at Chateau Lascombes. Lisa, holding an MBA, with a background in the wine trade, has done harvests at Chateau Léoville-Barton and in Australia. Her plan is to take over the business during during the next few years.
