Domaine de Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 1er Cru 2004 - First Bottle

Reviews

91 Vinous -
Good ruby-red. Reduced, inky nose hints at licorice. Then impressively rich and concentrated, with real power to the currant, iron and tobacco flavors; one senses the red clay soil here. This has the sheer stuffing (the wine is carrying 14.5% alcohol) to handle its serious, powerful tannins, which arrive late. There's a peppery nuance on the finish. Confuron says this will be at its best in 15 years-"or drink it with truffles in 20 years." (Incidentally, I retasted the hugely rich, sappy 2003 version of this wine, and can report that it is in the process of closing down.)

About the Producer

The Domaine de Courcel is a 400 year old family owned winery, located in the village of Pommard. It's current owners are three sisters and one brother whom are descendants of the founders. Their red wines can be characterised by their elegance and minerality as well as their strong tannins, which blend in nicely with strong and beautiful aromas of red berries and toasted bread. The vineyars are essentially composed of prestigious Premier Crus. As such, the domaine is one of the larges estates of Pommard Premier Crus.
