Ronchi di Cialla Schioppettino Friuli 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Ronchi di Cialla 2015 Friuli Colli Orientali Sottozona Cialla Schioppettino di Cialla is a tangy, raw and unique wine with its distinct personality. This unusual expression certainly doles out those dusty, white-pepper aromas, and you get them here in large supply. This is a mid-weight red (with 11,484 bottles, 300 magnums and other large formats) that shows freshness and a light tannic touch. If you are interested in the indigenous grapes of Italy, this wine is well worth your attention.
93 Vinous -
Bright, deep ruby-red. Captivating aromas of boysenberry, blueberry and balsamic reduction. Dense, sweet and savory, with exotic flavors of candied blackberry, wet stones and sandalwood. Sneakily concentrated, complex and enlivened by perfectly integrated acidity, this lovely example of Schioppettino finishes long with a refined mouthfeel but also palate-staining depth.

What a story! Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi basically single-handedly saved the indiginous varietal Schioppettino (cultivated since the Middle Ages) after it was nearly wiped out from phylloxera. In the late 60s, with the help of Bernardo Bruno (Prepotto Mayor), they stumbled upon 60 surviving vines. They cultivated the property and quickly grew that to 3,500 vines. The family was awarded the prestigious Risit d'aur Prize (GoldenVine) for bringing back the Schioppettino grape, and to this day, it is a much sought-after bottling among aficionados and sommeliers. Because of its somewhat under-the-radar status, it has remained relatively affordable, despite its huge critical acclaim.

TODAY is the day to taste it for yourself, at our SUPERB price! 2015 is the current release (the winery holds back releases until they feel they are ready), and it is a taste sensation. Fun fact: the name means “gunshot” or “little crack”. Maybe that is why this wine is like crack for sommeliers and winemakers!

PAIRING IDEAS: Perfumey, savory, yet SO fresh with acidity, this is incredibly versatile with cheese, but a simple roast chicken with herb butter (whatever you have in the garden, plus garlic) is perfect, too. Some good cheese to start (or finish) and you’re set!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Toots and the Maytals! Just the kind of happy-making, perky, groovy reggae flow you need with this fun wine.

About the Producer

Schioppetino has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and locally known as Sclopetin or Ribolla Nera. The wine was highly sought after for its rarity and quality. Then came Phylloxera that almost wiped out all the plantings of Schioppetino and the drive to replant the more famous French vines. Winemakers knew they had to spare some cutting, so they planted a few vines in an area spared from Phylloxera's destruction. At the end of the 1960's Schioppetino had almost disappeared and was considered extinct by bureaucrats. Then came Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi who founded the Ronchi di Cialla winery and brought back Schippetino. With the help of Bernardo Bruno (Prepotto Mayor) they stumbled upon 60 surviving vines. They cultivated the property and quickly grew that to 3,500 vines. The family was awarded the prestigious Risit D'aur Prize (GoldenVine) for bringing back the Schioppetino grape. The family also produces wines from Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo, Friulano, Refosco, Pignolo and Picolit. So many lovely native Italian varietals!
