Chateau Leroy-Beauval Bordeaux Superieur 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 Jeb Dunnuck -
Lots of cedary spice, spring flowers, cured meats, truffle, and green tobacco define the bouquet of the 2018 Chateau Leroy-Beauval, and it's medium-bodied, with a silky, elegant texture, fine tannins, and a beautiful finish. This classic, elegant, complex Bordeaux has real character as well as the ability to keep for 10-15 years in cold cellars. This estate is located in the Entre-de-Mer region and the wine is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in new barrels, made by Matthieu Richard, who handles the wines of Badette.
90-91 James Suckling -
This is another beautiful Bordeaux Supérieur with very fine tannins that frame a medium-bodied red with dark berries and hints of dark chocolate. Lovely.
90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Leroy-Beauval is a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 100% of which are new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with notes of baked black plums, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake with an undercurrent of cedar chest, dried Provence herbs and graphite. The full-bodied palate (15% declared alcohol) is jam-packed with black fruit preserves, framed by chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with an invigorating herbal lift.

We’ve been waiting patiently for this to arrive direct from the Chateau and it just landed. Tasted back in January, this deep, polished red simply crushes the competition (to our palates) at ANYTHING in the $40 range, much less OUR price today. Buy as much as you can, you’ll wish you bought more!

Spice, elegance, silk, beautiful textures...it’s just a few of the words the critics heap on this lovely wine. We love it for its forward personaily and depth of flavor, something we rarely encounter at this price level, and we taste container loads of stuff like this every year! Leroy-Beauval is in the Entre-de-Mer region and dates back to 1780 (read the deets in our "About" section for more) but since roughly 2012 it has been on a huge qualitative roll and is one of those “savvy” buys for those who drink a lot of Bordeaux (like us!).

While this will definitely improve over the next decade, it's pretty irresistible now, for sure. So polished! Loads of black raspberry, dark plums, refined texture and toasty spices, with the “correct” Bordeaux notes of sweet tobacco and cigar box, and pencil shavings too. Damn delicious if we do say so ourselves. Wildly well-priced...time to stock up while we have it!

Side note: this is SUCH a great deal, don’t think you need to make something complicated. We drank this last night with a burger, and MAN, it was great. $24! Still can’t believe it!

PAIRING IDEAS: Burger, of course! We also tried it with a Vietnamese beef salad, which rocked too. Hard to go wrong with just about anything!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Black Crowes. “Croweology” works great with this wine (and a burger!).

About the Producer

The famous history of the estate dates back to the 18th century. In 1780, Mr. Laurent de Loyac, Lord of Beauval, advisor to the parliament of Bordeaux and grandson of Montesquieu built a beautiful chateau and gaining his noble title of Chateau Beauval. In the middle of the 19th century, Chateau Beauval became the second home of Adolphe Alphand, engineer of the Bridges and Causeways, who participated in the development of Paris initiated by Baron Haussmann. In 2011, the vineyard was taken over by Alexandre and Stephanie Leroy. A brother and sister team that is very passionate about gastronomy and sensitive to respect of the environment and heritage.
