Gunther Steinmetz Von den Terrassen Piesporter Treppchen Riesling 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
From 2,500 square meters, the 2017 Piesporter Treppchen Riesling "von den Terrassen" yielded only 500 liters. The nose is bright, precise, super clear, very elegant and flinty but also ripe and concentrated. The attack on the palate is racy-piquant, the finish pure and very salty, full of vibrancy and finesse. This is a fabulous wine with so much purity. This is driven by its terroir rather than its grapes, if I may say so. Tasted in March 2019.
94 Wine Enthusiast -
Intense aromas of sunbaked slate and cut stone lend a savory, mineral edge to bright pineapple and yellow peach in this thrilling Riesling. Just a sliver off-dry and medium-bodied in style, it's a penetrating, zippy sip with a long, delightfully salty finish. Drinks beautifully in its youth but should improve well past 2030.
92 Vinous -
Concentration and stuffing are the hallmarks here, as with a great many of Steinmetz’s bottlings from this low-yielding vintage. (There are 500 liters of it – half the volume of its vintage 2016 predecessor.) But there is clarity as well as generous primary juiciness to this big-boned mineral tonic that some of his other 2017s lack. Piquantly pit- and seed-inflected white peach and grapefruit dominate on the nose and the glossy palate, leading to a powerfully gripping finish steeped in alkali and crushed stone. (For more about this striking set of terraces on the Wintrich communal line – adjacent to a fascinating sector traditionally known as Vorm Fels – consult my tasting note on the 2014 vintage. The terraces can also be seen in a photo that accompanies the introduction to my coverage of the Mosel in vintage 2015.)

Alright acid-heads! Crank up the Grateful Dead and enjoy another STUNNING Riesling from Stefan Steinmetz, one of the young superstars of the Mosel. From the legendary Piesporter Treppchen no less! Our price?! It could only happen because this wine is HIGHLY allocated to restaurants. If you are looking to taste one of the up-and-coming talents of Germany, making some of the most exciting Rieslings on earth, look no further. His expansive portfolio of holdings is almost exclusively consumed in Germany, but what little does make it into the states is gobbled up by Michelin-starred restaurants. Until now!

Stefan and his American wife are extreme viticulturalists, cultivating vineyards that most others would simply turn down because of all the hard work. And that hard work payed huge dividends in a vintage like 2017. To quote Stefan on the vintage: "The qualities, however, are amazing. I don't exaggerate when I say that 2017 is one of the finest vintages in 30 years for us." The Wine Advocate made an effort to point out this wine. "Of the impressive range of wines, I'd like to draw your attention to two exceptional wines from Piesport: the beautifully pure but vibrating 2017 Piesporter Treppchen Riesling "von den Terrassen" and the 2018 Piesporter Grafenberg Riesling Kabinett, a salty, fresh, tensioned and mouthwatering picture-book Kabinett. Both wines have so much terroir expression but are extremely stimulating at the same time. Tasting with Stefan Steinmetz becomes pretty challenging since masses of interesting wines means masses of quality too."

We have...well...not enough! While it lasts!

About the Producer

A fifth generation winery in Brauneberg, that has been producing wine since the 19020's. Stefan Steinmetz was born in 1978 in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany to Hans Guenther and Edith Steinmetz. He began his first 3-years of education in Viticulture at the Weinbau Schule in Bernkastel-Kues, followed by a 2-year work-study program at Nationally Certified Staatlich Geprüfter Wirtschafter Weinbau and Hochschule in Trier. Weingut Günther Steinmetz was founded in the 1900s and overseen until 1938 by Stefan’s great-grandfather, August Steinmetz. Augus’s son, Wilhelm Steinmetz ran the winery from 1938 until his death in 1958 when the winery was passed on to his son, (and father of Stefan) Herr Hans Guenther Steinmetz. Stefan would take the reins of Cellar Master and cultivation manager in 2000 along with his mother, Edith, when his father became ill. His first vintage would follow the very next year. Stefan’s dedication to traditional winemaking practices and “working as close to nature” is well known.
