Gunther Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay Riesling GW 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Wine Enthusiast -
Intensely perfumed with notes of white blossom, struck slate and pristine white grapefruit, there's so much to enjoy just on the nose of this indisputably Mosel Riesling. It's a featherlight, racy sip that stuns the palate with electric shocks of lemon and lime and a smoky, petrichor finish. Just a touch of sweetness lingers. Gorgeous in its youth but sure to evolve beautifully through 2030.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2017 Wintricher Geierslay Riesling G W is beautifully clear, fresh and mineral on the stony but also aromatic and fruity nose. On the palate, this is a lush, refined and elegant Riesling with remarkable finesse, salty length and inner tension. This is a beautifully focused dry Riesling with crunchy slate and quartzite notes. Tasted in March 2019.
92 Vinous -
Strongly pit- and seed-inflected white peach and lime are accompanied by alkali and wet stone on the nose and on the dense but in no way weighty palate, both of these concentrated and penetrating. At 10 grams of residual sugar, the wine is technically halbtrocken but tastes dry. Cress and oregano serve for stimulatingly nippy and pungent complexity on a vibrantly sustained, innervating and refreshing finish. (Steinmetz did not attempt from 2017 his other usual Geierslay bottling dubbed “Sur Lie,” as there was simply too little fruit, and he was committed to utilizing some of it for his collaborative bottling with Christian Hermann, also reviewed in this report, under the heading “Steinmetz und Hermann.”)

Wow. Hold on to something when you taste this liquid lightning. Gorgeous, wildly perfumey and steely-crisp dry Riesling from Stefan Steinmetz that is a THRILL to drink. Our price?! It could only happen because this wine is HIGHLY allocated to restaurants. If you are looking to taste one of the up-and-coming stars of Germany, making some of the most exciting Rieslings on earth, look no further. His expansive portfolio of holdings is almost exclusively consumed in Germany, but what little does make it into the states is gobbled up by Michelin-starred restaurants.

The winery is located in Brauneberg, and this bottling hails from the small plot of just under 3 acres of vines that are over 60 years old, called Geierslay, on the banks of the Mosel. Stefan and his American wife are extreme viticulturalists, cultivating vineyards that most others would simply turn down because of all the hard work. And that hard work paid huge dividends in a vintage like 2017. To quote Stefan on the vintage: "The qualities, however, are amazing. I don't exaggerate when I say that 2017 is one of the finest vintages in 30 years for us."

We can rave about this all day, especially at our price, but take a look at the press raves yourself...pretty impressive stuff! We have...well...not enough! While it lasts!

PAIRING IDEAS: The first thing that comes to mind is the “Nam Khao Tod” at Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas. Crunchy, spicy, limey, herby Thai salad that is one of our all-time fave dishes.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: This is THRILLING wine, so how about some sweepingly rush-filled classical? HOLST -- The Planets, Mars. Google it.

About the Producer

A fifth generation winery in Brauneberg, that has been producing wine since the 19020's. Stefan Steinmetz was born in 1978 in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany to Hans Guenther and Edith Steinmetz. He began his first 3-years of education in Viticulture at the Weinbau Schule in Bernkastel-Kues, followed by a 2-year work-study program at Nationally Certified Staatlich Geprüfter Wirtschafter Weinbau and Hochschule in Trier. Weingut Günther Steinmetz was founded in the 1900s and overseen until 1938 by Stefan’s great-grandfather, August Steinmetz. Augus’s son, Wilhelm Steinmetz ran the winery from 1938 until his death in 1958 when the winery was passed on to his son, (and father of Stefan) Herr Hans Guenther Steinmetz. Stefan would take the reins of Cellar Master and cultivation manager in 2000 along with his mother, Edith, when his father became ill. His first vintage would follow the very next year. Stefan’s dedication to traditional winemaking practices and “working as close to nature” is well known.
