Domaine Marguerite Carillon Savigny-les-Beaune Les Talmettes Premier Cru 2018
“This was all supposed to go to an uber-luxe restaurant, but they just cancelled...want to taste it?" That was the intro from the Burgundy broker and man are we happy we did. DELICIOUS! Insanely well-priced...we were sure there was a mistake! From the idyllic valley next to Beaune, between Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses, comes this rich and amazingly drinkable barrel-aged white Burgundy.
The "Talmettes" vineyard (made famous by Simone Bize) is on a gentle slope with an ideal south-west exposure, next to the famous Vergelesses and Lavières vineyards. The soil is marl and limestone from the Bathonian age; light soil with a reddish coloration, strewn with sharp stones.
Quince, roasted hazelnuts, buttercream, lemon curd, and mouth-watering freshness backed up by a touch of warm toasted French oak. This will appeal to a huge array of Chardonnay drinkers -- it hits all the sweet spots, especially considering the price! While it lasts...!
PAIRING IDEAS: For us? Something along the lines of chicken in cream sauce, especially if you have some killer fresh mushrooms handy -- morels, porcini, etc.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Our plan is to put up our feet, pop open this gorgeous white Burgundy, and relax to some Neil Young's “Heart of Gold".
