Weingut Leitz Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spatlese 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 James Suckling -
Licorice, white-peach and lemon-pie aromas pour from the glass. Juicy and racy with a long, super-clean finish that's just off-dry, thanks to the mineral freshness.
91 Wine Spectator -
Graceful and light, yet expressive and ripe, this shows an alluring mix of mango, papaya and tangerine flavors, with notes of mineral echoing in the background. Mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2030. 250 cases imported.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that makes you say: “WHY don’t I drink more Riesling??” Even better, this isn’t a $50+ bottling, no, no, this is one incredible buy that will knock you out with its refreshing, soul-invigorating power. Amazing! We'd also like to remind you of the greatness of this vintage by quoting one of our favorite German winemakers, Stefan Steinmetz who said, "I don't exaggerate when I say that 2017 is one of the finest vintages in 30 years for us."

The winery, which was started in 1744, was destroyed during World War II. It was then rebuilt by Josef Leitzby. Johannes Leitz now runs the show, focusing on the unique terroir and signature of Rudesheim.

We put this in the “impossible-to-put-down" category, as you keep coming back for more. Low alcohol, fantastic zest and energy, with tropical fruit and such terrific acidity the wine just floats in lovely balance. A mega-steal at $19.95 and 93 points! We have 30 cases to sell!

PAIRING IDEAS: It’s always a no-brainer to do pork of some type, but go Chinese. Go spicy. A great dish that is hot right now is mapo tofu (you can make it vegetarian, too). So addictive, like this wine!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We’re just feeling some good John Butler Trio for this combo. Sort of cooler, funkier, more reggae-d out Jack Johnson vibe. Check it out!!

About the Producer

The Leitz family winemaking history dates all the way back to 1744. Josef Leitz re-built the winery after a bombing raid on the area late during the Second World War. The winery was then passed down to his son Antonius Leitz who only took ownership for a brief time before his premature death. It wasn't until 1985 when Johannes took over the winery and it once again became a primary focus. After taking hold of the family business, he managed to acquire 37.1 more hectares and gain national and international recognition for the outstanding wines. All of Johhannes' wines carry his individual signature and show off the varied greatness of the Rudesheim terroir from which they are born.
