Once & Future Mataro Oakley Road Contra Costa 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Vinous -
The 2018 Mataro Oakley Road Vineyard is soft, fruity and absolutely delicious wine, with lovely red berry, spice and floral character. Bright saline notes extend the finish nicely. Medium in body and supple, with impeccable balance, the 2018 is so delicious. These own-rooted vines planted in the late 1890s confer real depth of flavor as well as personality. This is such a classy wine.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Post Ravenswood, Joel Peterson went ALL IN on what originally made him famous - sourcing small batches of incredible fruit from old-vine Zinfandel and field blend vineyards, and making dead-serious, ageable, complex and powerful wines. Normally very hard to find, we scored a small (emphasize: SMALL!) parcel of several of the greats from the portfolio. There’s always a bevy of critical acclaim and plenty to read about below but know that these are amazingly complex wines that get better with age - so get enough to hide a few in the cellar!

Mataro, better known as Mourvedre, in this unique growing environment is a national treasure and if it weren't for people like Joel, these vineyards may very well be track homes by now. These own-rooted, super old vines (118 years old!) are born of sandy soils

About the Producer

Joel Peterson started Ravenswood in 1976 to focus on his love of Zinfandel. Once & Future is a continuation of Joel's early work at Ravenswood as he's returned to many of the original vineyards he used, Oakley, Sangiacomo, and Teldeschi, while also incorporating the famed Bedrock vineyard owned with his son Morgan Twain-Peterson and Palisades vineyard in Calistoga. An insider's wine for now, it won't take long for the word to get out... get in early!
