Fonseca Vintage Porto 2017 (half bottle 375mL) - First Bottle

Reviews

98 Wine Enthusiast -
The wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine.
97 Wine Spectator -
Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060. 1,000 cases imported.
96-98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto C?o, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Unbelievable. Every major critic has weighed in, and this is clearly one of the greats from the legendary FONSECA (1st release was in 1840), from this fine vintage --- a wine to cherish anytime you drink it, from 2021 to 2099 (yes, really). To quote Robert Parker: "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports." We are GOBSMACKED, breathlessly percolating with excitement to have snagged a small parcel of this legendary wine. PLEASE get some. Please. You should probably get a physical before trying this, to make sure your body and mind can handle the CASCADE of outrageous flavor intensity and orgasmic heights of wine appreciation you will be reaching. It's just too much to encapsulate in this small missive. Read the GUSHING REVIEWS below for more insight and data points, but suffice it to say each sip is so mind-blowingly concentrated, intense, layered and harmonious, not to mention the fantastic weight and grace, and the finish that seems to go on until you go to bed and brush your teeth. The jaw-dropping concentration of figs, plums, berries, molasses, homemade jam, mocha, my word... it's really just outlandishly good. You can taste it 5 minutes later. Gotta stop. Love ya- grab a few, while it lasts.

About the Producer

From the legendary 1840, Fonseca's first Vintage Port release, to the superb declared vintages of the last decade, the house has produced a succession of highly acclaimed wines even in the most adverse moments of history. This consistency derives not only from continuity of family involvement, and the knowledge and skill passed down from one generation to the next, but also a close link with the vineyard. The firm's three estates of Cruzeiro, Panascal and Santo Antonio are the heart of the distinctive character of Fonseca's Vintage Ports. Fonseca's respect for the vineyard and the unique environment of the Douro Valley expresses itself in the firm's leadership in the field of sustainable and organic viticulture. It was the first house to offer a Port made entirely from organically produced grapes. As it approaches its bicentenary, Fonseca can take pride in its past and look forward to the future with confidence. Wine drinkers increasingly seek wines of authenticity and character with a genuine story to tell and made by creative winemakers who understand their terroir and respect the environment. Perhaps more than any other Port house, Fonseca has built a loyal community of Port enthusiasts who value its individuality and the inimitable character of its wines. These include connoisseurs, collectors, sommeliers and restaurateurs as well as those who simply enjoy drinking its wonderfully rich and complex Ports.
