Donnhoff Riesling (Dry) Krotenpfuhl Grosses Gewachs 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
A dense and very intense white with a tight ball of fruit, yet driven and linear acidity. Superb depth and focus. Needs a few years to come out completely, but already energetic. Transparency in the bottle
93 John Gilman -
The 2018 Krötenpfuhl GG is absolutely superb this year. The wine is very pure on the both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering a lovely mix of pink grapefruit, tart orange, salty minerality, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very well-balanced, with a lovely core, ripe, vibrant acids and great focus and grip on the long, nascently complex and very elegant finish. Superb juice. (Drink between 2026-2060)
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl Riesling trocken –GG– is super clear, pure, fresh and flinty on the nose. Intense and powerful on the palate, this is a linear, salty-piquant and lingering Riesling with grip and tension but also purity and finesse. Still young but very elegant. Tasted in July 2019.
91 Vinous -
The nose pungently and enticingly combines oregano, mustard seed, lemon zest and sea breeze. The palate is firm, tangy and bright, at 13% alcohol coming off as full and forceful. The mustard seed suggestion adds stimulating cut to a finish whose lemony brightness and animation are surprising for the vintage, and which is admirably transparent to stony, alkaline and saline nuances. (For background on this bottling – as well as information about the site – consult my lengthy review of the inaugural vintage 2017 installment.)

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

We have a VERY fine price on this very limited wine, usually sold almost exclusively to restaurants. The Krotenpfuhl vineyard is notable for its high share of gravelly quartzite. Between the stony ground and its southern aspect, this neighbor to the Kahlenberg is known for warm soils and early flowering of the vines year after year. The loess loam substrate retains water well, ensuring the vines have sufficient moisture even in drought years. Vines growing in this type of pebbly soil tend to produce small berries with delicate aromas, a lively acidity and a long hang time.

This is aromatically intoxicating with Pummelo, sea spray and jasmine flower with subtle hints of crushed corriander. Its texturally rich, explosively mineral and akin to a grand cru white Burgundy in its completeness, complexity and super long finish. This is just starting to show itself but will require at least a few years of cellaring to be at its best. I'd recommend a 2 hour decant if you decide to open this spring or summer. This is just a lovely bottle of white wine on par with the best in the world.

Grab a few for the cellar! While it lasts...!

PAIRING IDEAS: CURRY. Seriously. It’s fantastic. Everyone has a favorite curry style and/or curry dish, whether vegetable or meat based, so just go for your fave!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: If you like classic old school techno, why not go with the greatest pioneers of electronic music EVER? Kraftwerk, from Dusseldorf, Germany. THIS is the album: "Computer World". SO good.
