Harrington Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Wheeler Vineyard San Benito County 2018
We’re offered a lot of delicious, shockingly well-priced Harrington wines over the years. Now with the winery closing the doors, the pricing is even more irresistible, considering the quality level and pedigree of vineyard and of winemaking.
This Cabernet is from a fabulous jewel of American viticulture and an area that once was more famous than Napa Valley for growing Cab: Wheeler Vineyard. Here’s Ian Brand on the Siletto family, who own and organically farm the Wheeler vineyard: “San Benito County was the site of some of California’s earliest commercial vineyards. Long hidden under the cloak of Almaden, and out of fashion in California’s fruity phase, it’s rocky vineyards and historic vines are carrying San Benito wines back into fashion. The Siletto family provides one of the necessary connections between what was, and finding what will be, in San Benito wine growing. Their relentless experimentation and forward thinking farming points toward a bright future.”
Lifted floral aromas laced with blackberry, cherry-plum and chalk dust, this is old-vine Cabernet (30-50 years old!) at its best, with serious depth, freshness and rocky minerality. It's not a blockbuster style of Cali-cab, this has an old-world, old-school sensibility that is a joy to drink.
We have just a smattering of cases... STOCK UP is all we can say! While it lasts...!
PAIRING IDEAS: Salmon and Cabernet? You bet. This style is perfect for grilled salmon, or rubbed and baked, with a big salad on the side.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: This is a fun, easy wine -- try Sublime’s Greatest Hits. It'll put you in the mellow summer mood for sure!
