Lampyridae Vineyards Estate Grenache Mt Veeder 2018
From a tiny 1-acre plot of Grenache on Mount Veeder at a stunning 2,500 feet - high above the fog layer - comes this picturesque vineyard with amazing valley views. We LOVE this mountain fruit, with its favorable diurnal ranges that make for optimal ripening conditions. The fruit is so delectable that even Beringer Vineyards, Fontanella, Handwritten and Kind Cellars (David Yogensen’s own label) have to have it. David Yogensen is a master in the craft, honing his skills through perseverance and determination with a deep passion for wine. His own label “Kind” has racked up multiple 99-point ratings from Wine Advocate, and he brings that same skill and passion to Lampyridae Vineyards. David believes in minimal interventions to allow the grape to shine through - “when one lets wine be itself, lets its character develop from within, rather than with an overabundance of external tampering, great wine happens!”
One sip of this Grenache, and we knew we had to have it! You know when a flavor or aroma triggers a happy memory? This did just that. It reminds us of a younger time when mom would make a hot, fresh cherry or strawberry pie. The aromas would be so overwhelming that we would sneak a taste while it was cooling (of course mom wasn’t too happy!). We still have no will power. This wine walks the line between bright and baked red fruits, intermingled with lovely warm, baking spices and peppercorn notes. Bright acidity, long finish and smooth tannins, this is a food-friendly wine.
We can’t get enough of this Grenache...trust us, this is a gem! We might be grabbing some of these for later!
PAIRING IDEAS: Grenache is awesome with Vietnamese or Chinese food, really. Nothing too spicy. We recommend the Shaking Beef from SF fave Slanted Door!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: “I’ll tell you what, what I really, really want” is this Grenache! Blast some Spice Girls - no shame!
