Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
#6 Top 100 Wines of 2020: Whiffs of dried strawberry and cherry mingle into darker notes of smoke and spice in this perfumed blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. A luscious, voluminous sip, it floods the palate with primary cherry and raspberry flavors but also a crush of minerals too. This readily approachable wine with fine, silky tannins should gain earthier complexities through 2030
93 Wine Spectator -
Warm and lush, with dark plum, blackberry and raspberry compote flavors rolling through, wrapped in black licorice notes and carried by a light tarry edge on the finish. Enjoyable up front, but has the stuffing for cellaring. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases imported.
92 Jeb Dunnuck -
Starting with the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape (50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Counoise), it offers ruby/purple color as well as an incredibly polished, elegant, medium-bodied style as well as red plum and blueberry fruits intermixed with violets, spring flowers, and pepper. Seamless, silky, and polished on the palate, with fine tannins and perfect balance, readers could do much worse than to have a case of this in the cellar.
91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Very much a classic representative of the appellation, Solitude's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is full-bodied and generous, lush and creamy through the mid-palate, then firming up slightly on the finish. Cola, spice and cherry flavors mingle easily, finishing long and savory. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% each Cinsault and Counoise, with aging in concrete tank (90%) and foudres (10%).

#6 of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of 2020! From one of the most storied families of Chateauneuf comes this stunning wine, out of magnum no less, that is sure to please any Rhone lover. Provincial herbs, ripe berries, and anise all come together beautifully in this well-endowed and structured Chateaunuef that will surely get better with time in the cellar (especially in magnum!) despite its forward and fruity personality.

About the Producer

The Wine Estate “Domaine de la Solitude” belongs to one of the oldest families of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, whose roots go back to the 15th century. In the 17th century, Hélène BARBERINI, a descendant of the illustrious Tuscan family of the same name, married Claude MARTIN, owner of a vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their grandson, Florent Lancon, would give a huge boost to “La Solitude” by creating the first label for the Appellation. Thus, “le Vin de la Solitude” became a symbol of quality and began to be exported, allowing a great terroir to come into its own. The Estate is a contiguous 100 acres with vines averaging 50 years of age. The estate is contingent upon the idea that great wine is created by the vines, without artifice, and tells the story of their setting. In 1999, Michel and Jean decided to introduce four prestige cuvées and added Cuvée Barberini Rouge, Cuvée Barberini Blanc, Réserve Secrète, and Cornelia Constanza to the winery’s production.
