Tertre Roteboeuf Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2010 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Jeff Leve: The Wine Cellar Insider -
Smoke, licorice, vanilla bean, toast, ripe and over ripe plum notes create the perfume. This is incredibly dense, sensuous and glycerin filled, the wine slips and slides all over your palate. With massive concentration and intensity of flavor, the wine is sexy, showy and flamboyant. There is no sensation of heat in the 16% percent finish. This is a wine for tasters seeking a night of hedonistic pleasure.
96 Vinous -
Saturated ruby. Deep aromas of red and black fruits, violet, gunflint, licorice and bitter chocolate, complemented by a sexy oak-derived note of hickory smoke. Large-scaled and sweet, but with terrific precision and refinement to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate, licorice and minerals. Finishes polished and long. Not as opulent or exotic as the 2009, but offers exceptional sweetness and size while managing to maintain impressive verve and thrust. A great 2010.

While I don't think the 2010 Château Tertre Roteboeuf matches the 2005 (or 2016), it's a brilliant Saint-Emilion that offers textbook Tertre notes of cassis, spicy wood, graphite, white truffle, sappy tobacco, and earth. Taking lots of air to open up and integrate its ample tannins, this beauty is full-bodied, has a seamless, layered texture, flawless balance, and a rock star of a finish. It's beautifully done and just now at the early stages of its prime drink window. It needs at least 2-3 hours in a decanter at this stage (and was even better on the second day). It's going to evolve for another 20-30 years in cold cellars.

OUTSTANDING 2010 right bank Bordeaux...This vintage will go down in the records books and it still surprises and delights with its intense structure, muscular fruit and minerals, and deft overall balance. Don't miss this stunner from this incredible vintage - Tertre-Roteboeuf is a small winery that has been making wine since 1978, in a picturesque town outside of St-Emilion. Francois Mitjavile is the brilliant and expert winemaker behind this culty project. A wistful character with an undeniable talent for producing exceptional and thought-provoking wines. This vintage is known for its optimal ripeness and this Tertre Roteboeuf is no doubt RIPE. The wine is luxurious with notes of leather, cedar cassis and balsamic reduction. It's full-bodied with savory complex layers, but what is most notable is the incredible length. This is a treasure for the cellar!

About the Producer

This Grand Cru property situated in the commune St. Laurent-des-Combes, a few kilometres south of of Saint-Emilion is a small vigneron house that was built in the 18th century. The properties name "Roteboeuf" comes from the hillside that was used to feed the cattle back in time many centuries ago. Francois took over the estate in 1978 from his father in law (Gilard Family), and his breakthrough vintage was 1985. A new cult wine was born and since then the quality has improved immensely. Now Tertre Roteboeuf can easily compete with Premier Grand Cru Classes in Saint-Emilion and even challenge first growths.
