Tertre Roteboeuf Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

96-98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Tertre Roteboeuf offers up gorgeous wild blueberries, crushed blackcurrants and redcurrants notes with touches of lavender, violets, Sichuan pepper and cloves plus a waft of anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is very firm with ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness and depth, finishing very long with some exotic spices coming through.
97 Vinous -
The 2017 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is once again one of the wines of the year. Deep, unctuous and concentrated, the 2017 is wonderfully rich from start to finish. Inky dark cherry, chocolate, licorice and cloves all open up in the glass. The 2017 is going to need a few years to soften, as the tannins are pretty imposing, and yet all the elements are in place for it to develop into a great wine. Tertre-Rôteboeuf remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. Wow.
97 Jeb Dunnuck -
One of the wines of the vintage is the 2017 Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf, which has much more fruit, opulence, and sexiness than just about every other wine out there. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from a fabulous terroir on the famed Saint-Emilion Cote Pavie, it reveals a saturated purple color as well as awesome notes of black raspberries, cassis, jammy blackberries, white chocolate, and tobacco. With plenty of classy oak, full-bodied richness, and a dense, powerful style on the palate, it needs at least 4-6 years of bottle age and will keep for 15-30 years or more. It’s a stunning effort from the genius of François Mitjavile.

When two top Bordeaux critics say "wine of the vintage", you might want to take note. Both Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni loved this classic Saint-Emilion from the hallowed limestone plateau with neighbors like Pavie, Angelus, Ausone and Troplong. Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf has rightfully earned its status in the very top echelon of Saint-Emilion producers after years of honing the farming and winemaking for the ultimate expression of right bank Bordeaux. It is owned by Francois Mitjavile, who also owns Château Roc de Cambes in the Côtes de Bourg. Production is tiny in comparison to some of its neighbors and Bordeaux, in general, with only 2,000 cases made annually.

This is a collectors item worth hoarding. This parcel has just arrived with the finest and freshest provenance available, directly from the winery's cold cellar. After the 6 bottles I snagged for MY cellar, we have a bit left and I can’t say enough about the ethereal qualities of this coveted wine.

A cellar centerpiece for decades to come...while it lasts!

PAIRING IDEAS: This needs some time (to put it lightly), but when you DO pop it, eat this absolute classic -- Beef Wellington. The mushrooms (add black truffles to really go crazy) with the puff pastry and beef is nothing short of utter decadence.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: This is sexy stuff. Try Al Green’s Greatest Hits, it’ll put you in the mood. "Let's Stay Together" is played at least once a week here at the First Bottle office!

About the Producer

This Grand Cru property situated in the commune St. Laurent-des-Combes, a few kilometres south of of Saint-Emilion is a small vigneron house that was built in the 18th century. The properties name "Roteboeuf" comes from the hillside that was used to feed the cattle back in time many centuries ago. Francois took over the estate in 1978 from his father in law (Gilard Family), and his breakthrough vintage was 1985. A new cult wine was born and since then the quality has improved immensely. Now Tertre Roteboeuf can easily compete with Premier Grand Cru Classes in Saint-Emilion and even challenge first growths.
