Fontodi Chianti Classico 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Vinous -
The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. I loved it.
94 James Suckling -
A rich, layered CC with intense cherry and flower character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
91 Wine Spectator -
Ripe black cherry, blackberry, iron, juniper and thyme flavors mark this solidly built red. The balance walks the line between the rich profile and the assertive tannins that deliver grip on the long finish. Best from 2021 through 2032. 7,800 cases made, 2,800 cases imported.
91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico gives the impression of being slightly mature or advanced, even now straight out of the gate. The hot and dry vintage has shaped aromas of candied cherry, dried plum, rum raisin, white chocolate and a dusty note of wet chalk. The wine is quite beautiful in terms of mouthfeel, with well-integrated alcohol and tannins that close without sharpness or astringency. This dark and sultry Sangiovese shows moderate fruit, focused mostly on dark blackberry and dried cherry. I would recommend a near-term drinking window for this pleasantly rich and accessible wine.

One of the all time great over-achievers in the world of wine. The 2017 Chianti from the "golden shell" in Panzano is a legend already. There is just so much to love in this beauty, you're going to be blown away by the purity and layered complexity. Double 94 point scores and insanely classy, with all the attention to detail you get out of the 97-point Flaccianello. Made from organic, estate grown Sangiovese.

Purchased by Dino Manetti in 1968, the Fontodi estate (certified organic!) contains vineyards that have been in production since the time of the Roman Empire. It is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the Conca d’Oro, or “Golden Shell”, a valley directly south of the town of Panzano. This remarkable amphitheatre-shaped landscape combines a high-altitude location with calcareous clay-schist soil and a truly remarkable micro-climate; generally, it is warm and dry with a marked difference between day and night-time temperatures.

We have (hopefully) enough to last the day. Happy drinking!

About the Producer

Fontodi has belonged to the Manetti family since 1968. The family has been associated for centuries with another activity typical of the Chianti region, the production of its famous terrecotte tiles. And it is in the name of this strong link with the territory and a great passion for quality that the estate has moved successfully towards an ever more attentive cultivation of the vineyards and a more profound knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the zone of Panzano. All Fontodi wines are produced from grapes coming from their own vineyards, picked by hand, chosen with care and vinified in a way that exalts the character of the vines and the territory.
