Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 James Suckling -
Aromas of blackberries, cloves, licorice, dried leaves, graphite and black olives. It?s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Structured and tannic with beautiful austerity and a long, mineral and layered finish. The tannins grow on the palate.
96-98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Lynch Bages is made up of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot aging in 75% new barriques. Very deep purple-black in color, the nose is quite coy and restrained to begin, fanning out to offer pure, ripe blackcurrants, black cherries and preserved plums with wafts of red roses, cigar box, incense, cardamom and fenugreek with savory touches of black olives, Marmite toast and smoked meats. Full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, with a solid foundation of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and superb freshness supporting the generous black fruit layers, finishing long with provocative ferrous suggestions.
98+ Jeb Dunnuck -
One of the finest vintages I've ever tasted from this address, the 2018 Château Lynch-Bages has everything you look for in a great wine: incredible aromatics, richness without weight, perfect balance, and a purity of fruit that's just about off the charts. Dense purple, it reveals a glorious perfume of blackcurrants and blackberry fruits, a deep, unctuous mouthfeel, building tannins, and a complex array of cedar pencil, tobacco, wood smoke, and chocolate. A true blockbuster in every sense, with masses of fruit and tannins as well as moderate acidity, it will probably merit a triple-digit score in a decade and is a 50+-year wine from this team.
97 Wine Spectator -
Vibrant, with a violet and cassis lead-in that then expands to include steeped black cherry and plum fruit as well as extra savory, iron and licorice root notes. Nice latent grip too, with a mouthwatering tug of earth at the very end. The fruit is so vibrant, it's a tease now, but there's structure here for the long haul, so be patient. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
The wine of Chateau Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Lynch-Bages is viewed to over deliver and outperform its status as an 1855 fifth growth. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavors and greater complexity as it matures. The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests. The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. The 2018 is lights out good and may go down as one of the great vintages of this wine that will be drinking beautifully for several decades.

About the Producer

Stretching over some 100 hectares in the commune of Pauillac, the vineyards of Lynch-Bages sit among favorably designed and picturesqu hillcrests. Lynch-Bages Estate owes part of its name to the ancient hamlet of Bages, which for centuries was home to generations of winemakers. In 1749, The property passed into the Lynch family for seventy-five years. Lynch-Bages is classified among the Fifth Growths in the prestigious 1855 Classification. In the 1930s, General Felix de Vial leased the vineyard to Jean-Charles Cazes, who was already in charge of Chateau Ormes de Pez in Saint-Estephe. Cazes would go on to purchase both properties on the eve of the Second World War. Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family ever since.
