Showing better than a previous bottle, the 2009 Larcis Ducasse is just now starting to come into its own, offering terrific, full-bodied aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, licorice, espresso, and leafy herbs. This deep, rich, full-bodied effort has absorbed its oak elevage beautifully, has a layered, unctuous texture, and plenty of sweet tannin. It's a heavenly Saint Emilion to enjoy over the coming 15+ years.

The deep garnet colored 2009 Larcis Ducasse sashays out of the glass with compelling scents of kirsch, dried roses, Black Forest cake and crème de cassis with hints of black tea, cigar box and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tautly structured with ripe, grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

(81% merlot and 19% cabernet franc): Red-ruby. Superripe, almost candied aromas of maraschino cherry, woodsmoke and coffee. Sweet, plush and impressively deep, with intense, penetrating dark cherry and licorice flavors that quickly shut down in the glass. Seriously structured and tannic wine, especially for merlot, and very long on the aftertaste. I'd forget about this for at least five years; by that point my original rating may look conservative. An outstanding vintage for this chateau.

Tons of ripe plum and damson here plus some bitter chocolate and balsamic richness that fill out the opulent body nicely. Generous supple tannins support the massive frame. Bold but long and harmonious finish. Drink or hold.

This has the fleshy, almost corpulent feel of the vintage, with enticing linzer torte, currant preserves, blackberry coulis and melted licorice notes. Warm and inviting already, with a nice sappy feel at the core. The finish picks up a slightly extracted, chewy edge that lacks the vivacity of the '05 or '10. Although well-stuffed and worthy of cellaring, the minerality may have dissipated by the time this comes of age.—Larcis Ducasse non-blind vertical (December 2012). About the Producer
In the 18th century, the Raba family, living in Bordeaux, made their fortune in commerce and maritime transport and in 1893, Henri Raba, a lover of great wines, bought Chateau Larcis Ducasse. His passion led him to invest a great part of his fortune in the Chateau and at his death in 1925, his wife and then his son Andre kept the flame burning. André died during the war, leaving no children, thus it was his niece, Hélène Gratiot Alphandéry, who inherited the property in 1941. She in her turn managed the property along with cellar-master Pharaon Roche and her son, Jacques Olivier Gratiot, director with l’Oréal and member of the Jurade, became manager in 1990. Under his guidance, the long tradition of quality that characterized the wines of Larcis Ducasse was not only maintained but also improved. Chateau Larcis Ducasse is still in the hands of the Gratiot Alphandery family and since 2002 the property has been under the management of Nicolas Thienpont.
