Chateau Fleur Cardinale Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
Super rich baking spices across ripe dark plums in a very suave and attractively styled nose. The palate has incredible depth and succulently seductive, fleshy plum flavors. Wow. Try from 2022.

The 2015 Château Fleur Cardinale is beauty in the vintage and checks in as a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up all in new oak. Offering sensational notes of black cherries and currant fruits, toasty oak, graphite, and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and gorgeously pure and elegant on the palate. It has fine tannin emerging on the finish and is made in a straight, structured, classic style. Give bottles a year to two and it should drink beautifully over the following 15+. I was able to taste this wine three separate times and, surprisingly, it showed best from a bottle purchased here in the US. It has the purity of fruit that's the hallmark of the vintage and is a gem readers should seek out. This wine is an exclusive of American Jeffrey Davies.
94 Decanter -
We are stepping up a gear with this wine from the late-ripening side of the plateau. It is showing extremely well, but is still very young. One of the more interesting wines to taste in bottle, because the final blend was only selected in March 2017. Expect seductive, well fleshed out fruit. Contemporary in style and extremely enjoyable. Consultants are Jean-Philippe Fort and Jean-Luc Thunevin.
93 Wine Specator -
Delicious dark fig and boysenberry confiture flavors run from start to finish here, with a graphite spine embedded along the way. Flashes of anise, tar and singed mesquite add range. Not shy, but has the cut to pull it off. Best from 2022 through 2032. 9,583 cases made.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2015 Fleur Cardinale is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 100% new oak barrels for 13 months. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has a nose of fragrant violets, cedar chest and rose hips over a core of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves and blueberry pie. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich and plush with plenty of layers and great length.

96 POINTS. Killer ‘15 vintage. UNDER $50! NOT FOR THE SHY. This favors the BOLD, the adventurous, the oenophiles of strong constitution and lovers of hedonistic opulence. Fleur-Cardinale is WELL known as a huge overachiever, you’ll know when you taste it...as James says: “Super rich baking spices across ripe dark plums in a very suave and attractively styled nose. The palate has incredible depth and succulently seductive, fleshy plum flavors. Wow. Try from 2022.” While the Chateau dates back to the 1920s, the real story of when Fleur-Cardinale began firing on all cylinders starts in 2001 with the purchase by the Decoster family, who brought in super-consultant and St. Emilion neighbor Jean-Luc Thunevin. It was rock stardom from there on... Packed with uber-rich toasty French oak, super plummy plum jam, it’s warm and rich, with whiffs of mocha and roasting coffee beans and fresh-baked pie. Tons of mouthcoating texture and manages to not feel heavy, despite its concentration. Delicious, hedonistic, serious stuff!! Yeah, did we mention 96 points?? While it lasts...not a lot today!
