Ken Wright Pinot Noir Canary Hill Eola-Amity Hills 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Wine Spectator -
Polished and elegantly complex, with expressive rose petal, raspberry and orange peel accents that glide on a long, supple finish. Drink now through 2024. 624 cases made.
93 Wine Enthusiast -
Bright raspberry and cherry fruit digs deep and spreads out across the palate. Barrel aging adds chocolate and a touch of funk. This is among the yummiest of the KW 2016 Pinots, with a saline note that brings a finishing touch of peanut butter.
91 James Suckling -
This has an earthy array of forest wood and spiced dark cherries and plums with a very ripe palate that offers earthy, soft and ripe style. Drink now. Synthetic cork.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Ken Wright is legendary for his focus on single-vineyard designate pinot noir. Starting Panther Creek in 1986 with a few barrels, he quickly became THE pinot guy to have, and even more so after he sold it to start his eponymous winery. To this day, he is still crushing it, and with the string of excellent vintages in Eola-Amity Hills, this should be on your short list. AT THIS PRICE!? Yes!

The Canary Hill vineyard is 9.5 miles west of Salem, Oregon. Originally planted in 1983, with more than half of the vineyard is actually own-rooted! It is perfectly situated on an east facing slope 450-550ft above sea level on Nekia and Jory volcanic soils. Canary Hill may be one of the older vineyards in the Eola Hills of the Willamette Valley, but its modern history is fairly easy to summarize. Ken Wright liked the vineyard so much that he bought the property outright from Dick and Nancy Daniel in 2006.

With lush texture, deep and resonant black plum aromas and flavors, forest underbrush, bright red berries and citrus driven acidity typical of the vineyard, this bottling is sensational (not to mention our price!). We have about 25 cases or so at this excellent price...please grab a few while we have it!

PAIRING IDEAS: How about this reco from sommelier Amy Racine? “A hearty burrito with a spicy salsa calls for a juicy, but low tannin red wine so it doesn’t amplify the spice (in a bad way)...Ken Wright makes a style that has a smokey tone for the beans and char on the tortilla. It’s fruitiness comes by way of plum and blackberry flavors, which are especially great for a beefy carne asada burrito.”

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Pop open this Oregon pinot, put on a record of Kenny G jazz and relax! Any album and any song...we love them all! Relax we've got you covered!

About the Producer

In 1986, with family, belongings and 10 barrels in tow, Ken moved to McMinnville and started Panther Creek Cellars. His concept of focusing on vineyard-designate bottling began during those years at Panther Creek and was cemented as a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded in historic downtown Carlton. Ken now makes a single vineyard bottling from 13 vineyard sites in the Northern Willamette Valley.
