Domaine des Pierres Seches St. Joseph Cuvee Aubert 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94+ Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2017 Saint Joseph Aubert is more complex and layered. Lots of cassis, cedarwood, dried herbs, and cured meats, as well as graphite, give way to a full-bodied, pure, serious Saint Joseph that has a stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. Do your best to hide bottles for 3-5 years. This wine comes from vines near Ste Epine and St Jean de Muzols, and is aged 18 months in new, once-, and twice-used oak.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A special bottling from 80-year-old vines in Saint Jean de Muzols, the 2017 Saint Joseph Aubert replaces this estate's Sainte Epine bottling. It's aged 18 months in second and third-fill barrels, enough to give it a plush coat of vanilla, cedar and baking spices without detracting from the underlying cherry and blueberry fruit. Full-bodied and rich, it nevertheless retains a sturdy granitic core, which comes through on the stony finish.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

One of our favorite under-the-radar producers of the Northern Rhone -- we love the purity and focus of these brilliant wines. The talented Sylvain Gauthier works his 80+ year-old vines from the tiny lieu-dit “Sainte-Épine” made famous by the likes of Delas, Gonon, and Trollat. This is astoundingly terrific for just under $45!

This is such a lovely, powerful, minerally, brilliant wine. Palate-wise, this has a lot in common with the fabled Hermitage, with its deep concentration and layered texture, but it also sports some of Cote Rotie’s signature savory qualities. Saint-Joseph shares many similar traits to Hermitage, with its high elevation, granitic soils and steep slopes. This single vineyard, Saint-Épine, sits directly across the Rhone river from Hermitage in one of the most important townships in all of Saint-Joseph - St. Jean de Muzols. Purple/black and exploding with cassis, boysenberry and black raspberry, deeply savory minerality, crushed flower petals, wild herbs and liquified rock...long and lingering, with just a bit of chewy, but well integrated tannin that implies a decade or more of life with ease.

Truly a wine that drinks WAY over its price and one that can stand toe to toe with some of the very best wines being made in the region today. If you love the Northern Rhone, you need this in your cellar for drinking and loving while your $150+ Chave and Guigal wines age! 25 cases to sell...first come, first served!

PAIRING IDEAS: Mmmm...Syrah is always a fun one. Cassoulet is the classic dish (this recipe uses chicken, but duck is amazing, too), if you’re up for it. Venison is fantastic, or lamb, grilled or braised, especially with mushrooms in the mix. Just think HEARTY!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Deep, rumbling, brooding, full of depth and power. Led Zeppelin, Trent Reznor, Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division/early New Order, RATM, Rush...the world is your oyster.

About the Producer

Winemaker Sylvain Gauthier cares for his 13.5 acres of land according to organic practices. He started his micro-domaine in 2007, the name "pierres seches" inspired by the many hand-built stone walls that support vineyard terraces in the region.
