Chateau Grand-Pontet Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2009 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A blend of 70% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine has an opaque purple color and a sweet nose of vanillin, roasted coffee beans, chocolate and kirsch liqueur intermixed with blacker fruits such as cassis. It is rich, full-bodied, moderately tannic, but low in acidity and quite heady and powerful (15% natural alcohol). This impressive wine is a big, back-strapping effort to drink over the next 15+ years. Produced by Sylvie Pourquet, the sister of Gerard and Dominique Becot, this St.-Emilion grand cru classe comes from a 35-acre vineyard that consistently makes top flight wines, but I don’t think they have ever made one as impressive as their 2009.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Our Bordeaux connection came through big time last month. 2009s are just hitting their stride, and we bought every bottle we could -- alas, that’s not much! Get some to drink sooner, and put a few away for up to another decade.

Michel Rolland's top assistant, Jean Philippe Fort, is the consultant here, and the Rolland polish is all over this wine. This is gloriously entering its secondary and tertiary flavor profile with wonderful forest floor, worn leather and tobacco aromas. This is ready for BUSINESS right now! If you're looking for a cellar-direct parcel with pristine provenance and immediate drinking pleasure, look no further. This is ripe with coffee liqueur, blackberry, leather and balsamic reduction in a full-bodied, full-throttle expression of St. Emilion Grand Cru.

While it lasts...!

PAIRING IDEAS: We have fond memories of sitting in the square at the top of the hill in St. Emilion, eating a simple, perfect, salty, rich, crunchy, beefy meal of steak frites. Do THAT, and since true “French fries” are a bit complex to do, make THIS, it’s just as crunchy/fantastic and way easier.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: If you’re up for it, listen to Iggy Pop’s French/English albums Préliminaires and Après, they will get you in the Bordeaux mood!
