Saint Jean du Barroux Ventoux La Pierre Noire 2016
2016 -- you know what a rockstar vintage this is in the Rhone, and Philippe Gimel has completely knocked it out of the park with this 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah blend from the Ventoux. Earning a spot of #39 on Jeb Dunnuck's top wines of 2020, this wine really crushes it in 2016. Savvy Chateauneuf-du-Pape lovers know there is a world of wines made outside the appellation that mirror the greatness of CdP, and often are QUITE a bit less. Saint Jean du Barroux Ventoux La Pierre Noire is a PERFECT example. Philippe Gimel is educated as an oenologist (Diplome National d'Oenologue de Toulouse) and has worked at different estates - in Rhone - at Chateau de Beaucastel and at Domaine de la Janasse. For years, he was looking for a place to start his own production of wine. After looking at many vineyards for sale, he at last found vineyards with an interesting terroir, and he bought these vineyards in 2003, never looking back!
We have about 18 cases to sell -- if you love the rich, warm, expansive style of the best CdPs, you should do whatever you can to snag this!! While it lasts!
PAIRING IDEAS: BBQ some St. Louis cut ribs. Really. It complements this “CdP style” wine amazingly well. Rub them overnight, smoke and/or grill at 225 degrees until done, brush a little sauce on right at the end. Make a salad. LUXURIATE!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Anything David Byrne. The new American Utopia release (from his live show) is super-fun to watch whilst eating ribs!
