Schloss Lieser Thomas Haag Riesling Trocken (Dry) SL Helden Spatlese 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

91 Vinous -
Via a bit of verbal trickery (or, one could say, thanks to a lucky accident), Thomas Haag remains able to bottle a second dry wine – i.e., in addition to the relevant Grosses Gewächs – that is sourced from and labeled to refer to the Einzellage Niederberg Helden. (Two dry wines expressly labeled “Niederberg Helden” would violate the letter of VDP regulations.) A reductive, fermentative veil largely parts with aeration to reveal scents of apple, white peach, lime and grapefruit. Things really pick up on the polished palate, with vivaciously bright primary juiciness invigoratingly tinged with piquancy of citrus peel, fruit seeds and pits. Alkaline and stony inflections lend intrigue to a superbly sustained, cheek-pinching, consummately refreshing finish.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Under German wine law, a winery can only produce a single GG (Grosses Gewächs) from any given vineyard per vintage. Because of this law, this wine cannot be labeled GG despite being made in the same way and coming from Helden. In short, this is a second GG produced by Schloss Lieser from Helden. Why does that matter? Well, the price you see! Schloss Lieser's Niederberg Helden GG will run you upwards of $50 a bottle, and today (after we worked our magic), we have a gorgeous GG level dry Riesling from Helden for about half of what the GG trades for!

This is electrifying wine to drink with complex aromas of wet slate, key lime and green apple skin aroma. The palate is pure and focused, with glorious acids that balance underripe white peach, lime curd and white flowers.

Bonus: Schloss-Lieser is literally a fairy tale winery/hotel/spa on the Mosel, built in 1884 -- browse the pics while you drink this --- magic!

This is textbook, and just plain delicious. Absolutely fantastic at our price...only 22 cases!

PAIRING IDEAS: Smoked meat dishes are amazing with dry Riesling. Think salad/fruit with prosciutto, smoked or cedar-planked salmon. A fun and easy dish to make for a big group is choucroute (actually Alsatian, don’t tell anyone) with extra smoked pork chops and different mustards.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: The Bs! Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms! Although we do like us some Strauss, too, especially “The Blue Danube”.

About the Producer

Schloss Lieser is a fairy-tale castle along the Middle Mosel (seriously, look it up!), the most noble Riesling region of the world. A hidden gem, revived and restored with quality and advanced building techniques without losing any elements of it rich imperial history. While the property is enchanting, the wines are out of this world. If you have never tasted a Riesling from Schloss Lieser, then you haven't lived.
