Schloss Lieser Thomas Haag Riesling Trocken (Dry) SL Helden Spatlese 2016
Under German wine law, a winery can only produce a single GG (Grosses Gewächs) from any given vineyard per vintage. Because of this law, this wine cannot be labeled GG despite being made in the same way and coming from Helden. In short, this is a second GG produced by Schloss Lieser from Helden. Why does that matter? Well, the price you see! Schloss Lieser's Niederberg Helden GG will run you upwards of $50 a bottle, and today (after we worked our magic), we have a gorgeous GG level dry Riesling from Helden for about half of what the GG trades for!
This is electrifying wine to drink with complex aromas of wet slate, key lime and green apple skin aroma. The palate is pure and focused, with glorious acids that balance underripe white peach, lime curd and white flowers.
Bonus: Schloss-Lieser is literally a fairy tale winery/hotel/spa on the Mosel, built in 1884 -- browse the pics while you drink this --- magic!
This is textbook, and just plain delicious. Absolutely fantastic at our price...only 22 cases!
PAIRING IDEAS: Smoked meat dishes are amazing with dry Riesling. Think salad/fruit with prosciutto, smoked or cedar-planked salmon. A fun and easy dish to make for a big group is choucroute (actually Alsatian, don’t tell anyone) with extra smoked pork chops and different mustards.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: The Bs! Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms! Although we do like us some Strauss, too, especially “The Blue Danube”.
