Reviews

Sacrashe: From a site next to Sloan, on the eastern side of Rutherford, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe boasts a deep purple hue as well as stunning notes of gravelly earth, chocolate, graphite, and spiced red and black fruits. Deep, rich, and full-bodied, it stays relatively tight and compact on the palate, with laser-like precision. The tannin quality is top-notch and it’s another beautiful wine in this lineup. As with the Artalade, it was barrel fermented and brought up in 80% new oak.

Sacrashe: Very deep purple-black colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe sings of black cherry compote, wild blueberries, kirsch and cassis with nuances of raspberry leaves, fragrant soil, violets and unsmoked cigars plus a waft of cedar chest. Full-bodied, firm and grainy with lively freshness and loads of earthy sparks, it finishes long with fantastic freshness.

Denali: Offering up a ripe, sexy, forward style, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali comes from a noteworthy vineyard in St. Helena and is 100% barrel fermented Cabernet that spent 22 months in 80% new oak. Tons of ripe black raspberries, cassis, mulled spices, and dried flower notes all soar from the glass and this beauty has a seamless texture and a great finish. It’s not holding anything back, so I see no need to delay gratification.

Artalade: The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade comes from a site on Pritchard Hill and is all barrel fermented Cabernet that spent 22 months in 80% new French oak. It’s loaded with notions of red and blue fruits, toasted spices, chocolate, and violets. These all carry to a full-bodied, fleshy, opulent Cabernet that has loads of upfront charm and character. It’s going to drink beautifully for upwards of two decades. There are only 100 cases.

Winemaker Jean Hoefliger needs no introduction to you savvy folks. Too many 95-100 point scores to count from his various projects, but Debate is special. The concept, of course, is to make 3 wines exactly the same way, from 3 distinct vineyards around Napa Valley. These are three tremendous hillside sites that absolutely deliver in terms of palate intensity, concentration and sheer power. They are all ALWAYS stunning, opulent, concentrated, plush - the debate is an instant classic.

About the Producer

Wines, like people, are a reflection of their origin and evolution. By selecting three different vineyards with three different expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and making them in the same way, the Debate seeks to point out the diversity of terroir as well as the diversity of people. We live in an age where less and less time is spent at the dinner table discussing these different points of view. The Debate's mission is to bring people together to share a glass of wine to discuss and debate just as our team does. Proprietor Rob McKay partnered with the venerable Jean Hoefliger to craft his vision. Quickly these wines have garnered tremendous critical success and a cult following. Let the Debate begin!
