Ferraton Hermitage Cuvee Les Miaux 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Wine Spectator -
This is smoldering in feel, with tobacco and warm earth notes leading the way, followed by steeped raspberry and plum reduction accents. Judicious toast takes a back seat, letting loam and mesquite elements play out on the finish. Best from 2021 through 2034. 200 cases made, 30 cases imported.
94 Jeb Dunnuck -
Coming from the eastern side of Hermitage (with more clay and limestone soils) and aged in just 10% new French oak, the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as ripe, hedonistic notes of red and black currants, incense, bloody meat, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Ripe, sexy, and full-bodied, it's already approachable yet promises to keep for 15-20 years.
93 Vinous -
Inky ruby. Expansive aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, potpourri and candied licorice are complemented by smoky mineral and spice nuances. Juicy, expansive blackberry, bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors become sweeter and put on weight as the wine opens up. Gently gripping tannins lend shape to an impressively long, spice-tinged finish that echoes the floral and blue fruit notes. This wine registers a pH of 3.8, by the way, but it definitely doesn't lack for energy. 15% new oak.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A blend of Les Dionnières (70%) and Le Méal (30%), the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux features gentle cedary accents to the cherry, raspberry and black olive core of fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, this solid effort finishes long and velvety.

If inky, powerful, minerally, pure and absolutely plushly concentrated Syrah is up your alley, it’s time to step up -- we won’t see pricing like this again anytime soon. Wow! This is stunningly impressive Hermitage. Only 200 cases were made and 30 were imported to the USA! Here are our notes (read the pros below!):

Pretty modern and forward Hermitage, sandalwood and blackberry with fig compote and crushed granite aromas. Rich and mouth coating this is full-bodied with blue and black berry flavors laced with baking spice and earthy minerals. This drinks surprisingly well right right when you pop the cork but will surely improve with time in the bottle. This is organic and biodynamic and from the Eastern portion of Hermitage, mostly Dionnières with 30% Meal and sees just 15% new oak for 12 months and then 6 months in concrete, a big shift for Ferraton put in place after the 2013 vintage. First come, first served…!

About the Producer

Founded in 1946 by Jean Orens Ferraton, the company began with a tiny parcel of two-thirds of an acre on the hill of Hermitage. Over time the family slowly expanded its holdings into Crozes Hermitage and Saint Joseph which they farm 100% biodynamically since 2000. Around this time a partnership was formed with Michel Chapoutier to help bring the brand to the next level. Today the wines are better than they have ever been.
