Giornata Proprietary Red Gemellaia Paso Robles 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Vinous -
Brilliant ruby color. Expansive cherry, mulberry and floral scents are accompanied by building spice, earth and mineral nuances. Conveys an impressive blend of depth and energy to its bitter cherry and dark berry flavors, which turn sweeter and more lively as the wine opens up. Seamless in texture and finely delineated, showing outstanding energy and floral thrust on an impressively long, gently tannic finish.

Giornata is without question, in my mind at least, the premier winery in USA producing Italian varietals. No other winery has hit the nail on the head so deftly when it comes to emulating and mirroring the wines of Italy. On a recent tasting of the entire portfolio we were immediately transported first to the hills of Tuscany as we tasted their sangiovese and then to Barolo as we tasted their Nebbiolo. Lastly, the Super Tuscan inspired Gemellaia was the showstopper. It has Morello cherry, some Campari notes, red flowers, dried herbs and beautiful earth tinged minerals that linger for minutes. This is impeccably balanced and an absolute knock out for pizza night (Friday's at my house). As surprising as it may be, Paso Robles seems to be the perfect home for these Italian varietals.

About the Producer

After working for respected Zinfandel producer Rosenblum Cellars, Brian Terrizzi traveled to Italy to work with the famous Paolo DeMarchi at Isole e Olena in Tuscany. Brian's experience at the Tuscany winery provided him a great deal of insight into Italian winemaking, in addition to a month traveling and visiting other cellars from Tuscany to Sicily. During this trip he also reconnected with distant relatives in a small village in Sicily, the hometown of his ancestors famous for wine since the dawn of the Roman Empire. Brian's wine making pilgrimage has not endured without some doubt and skepticism. Several years ago, he almost abandoned his dream when one of California’s most famous winemakers told him: “If you want to make nebbiolo move to Italy. You’ll never do it here.” A couple of months later a meeting with Steve Clifton of Palmina winery refreshed his momentum. Steve convinced Brian to keep working toward his dream and shared stories of his own success.
