RAEN Pinot Noir Bodega Freestone-Occidental 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 James Suckling -
No. 6 Top 100 Wines of the United States of 2020: A really taut, focused red with lots of strawberry and black-tea aromas and flavors, as well as green tea. It’s full-bodied with a racy tannin structure and a pure, energetic finish. Needs time to shows all it has, but already beautiful. Drink after 2022.
94 Vinous -
The 2018 Pinot Noir Bodega is the clear stand out in this range from Raen. Pliant and deep, with terrific presence, the Bodega is impeccably balanced from start to finish. I imagine it will be an even more compelling wine in another few years' time. Bright red cherry fruit, pomegranate, mint, spice and blood orange all infuse the 2018 with tons of character. This is such a pretty and expressive wine, but it needs time in bottle for some of its youthful austerity to soften.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
RAEN (pronounced “rain”) has Tim Mondavi’s sons focusing on Sonoma Coast and some of the best sites for pinot noir, and by all accounts the first releases are sensational. We have been following this project since its inception and the wines just keep getting better. The farming further honed in, and now practicing biodynamic and organic and fully committed to the utmost quality in sustainable farming and winemaking. It is a truly impressive project inspired by the pinot noirs made by Robert in the 60s and 70s, which still hold up to this day. We scored a small parcel of this, the highest scoring wine they have yet made, and a wine that will indeed age gracefully over the next 15-20 years. A wine of real class and pedigree that deserves a spot in every collector's cellar, especially for lovers of Burgundy. VERY LIMITED!

About the Producer

In a remote, raw territory where forests and meadows meet the Pacific Ocean, the story of RAEN began in 2013. Fourth-generation vintners and brothers, Carlo and Dante Mondavi (sons of Tim Mondavi and grandchildren of Robert Mondavi), admired these hills of the true Sonoma Coast for decades, recognizing their potential to yield whole-cluster pinot noirs of incredible expression, elegance, and length. RAEN (pronounced "rain") is their ethos, representing a dedication to Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally and reminding us that rain becomes wine in the vineyard every year.
