La Ca` Nova Barbaresco Montefico 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
Loaded with personality, this full-bodied red has earthy aromas of camphor, fragrant blue flowers, tilled soil and spiced plum. Round and concentrated, the savory palate offers juicy black cherry, licorice and tobacco accompanied by smooth, close-knit tannins. Dink 2022–2029.
94 Vinous -

The 2017 Barbaresco Montefico balances the structural framework typical of this site with the radiance of the year so well. Powerful and intensely mineral, the Montefico is a bit wild in its first approach, yet it has so much character. Bright red berry fruit, chalk, mint, sage and white pepper give the Montefico a brilliant upper register to play off its natural cut. I would plan on cellaring the 2017 for at least a few years.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
96s and 94s galore for this wonderful, still-under-the-radar producer! Our hands tremble to write this...BOTH single vineyard bottlings available at an eye-popping $39.95. Probably one of the greatest values in Piedmont -- Barbaresco is the center of the universe for Nebbiolo lovers right now (especially savvy ones…). We are beyond thrilled to have a small parcel -- whatever you do, don’t miss!! I am a huge personal fan of these wines, and drink them on the regular (currently the 2011 and 2014 regular) non single-vineyard bottlings are massive over-deliverers and utterly delicious, complex, ripe and silky. Anyway -- ‘17s are of extremely high-quality and deliver the goods big time. Read the reviews below, but know there are two of Barbaresco’s great vineyards, with Montestafano generally being the “bigger” and more cellarable. La Ca' Nova is run by the Rocca family who began making classic traditional wines in the 70s, and before that their grapes were sold to none other than Angelo Gaja. They use neutral, untoasted large 30 hectoliter casks of Austrian oak to age the wines, and they sing of unfiltered purity, strength and finesse. People, PLEASE! Get these wines!! OK, now we’ll let the pros tell it. While they last!!

About the Producer

Pietro Rocca, a fourth generation grape grower began making and bottling Barbarescos in the 1970s. Today, Pietro is joined by his sons, Marco, an enologist, and Ivan, an agronomist who tends to the vineyards. This estate has quietly been making outstanding, terroir-driven Barbarescos for generations from two of the denomination's top crus, Montestefano and Montefico.
