Parador Tempranillo Napa Valley 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Decanter -
With plantings sourced from Ribera Del Duero in 1998, this crianza-style homage to Spanish Tempranillo delivers the goods. The vines are planted in the renowned Stagecoach Vineyard in the Atlas Peak AVA and deliver a powerful wine that's aged exclusively in previously used French barriques. Dark fruits, dried potpourri, dusty walnut shells and a hint of cigar box make it ideal to drink with a prime rib roast, slowly cooked and moist, served with fingerling potatoes with rosemary.

Well this is really something. A 95 point wine from Stagecoach for under $30? Something must be wrong here, right? Nope. Our friend and renaissance man Steve Ventrello, when not importing fine wines and provisions or shredding on the accordion, he is quietly making some of the most exciting wines in Napa Valley.

Sourced from a special block that Jan Krupp planted for Steve from Tempranillo cuttings rumored to be from Vega Sicilia, this is 100% Tempranillo from the highly acclaimed Stagecoach vineyard. Parador's model is based on the wines of Vega and Pesquera with extremely long aging, both in barrel and in bottle. The near perfect 2013 vintage is another reason you should be buying this with reckless abandon, one of the finest vintages in Napa this century. We just love the complexity and nuance in this wine, there is no other domestic Tempranillo that so well channels the wines of the Ribera del Duero. Dark berries, dried tobacco, crushed volcanic rocks and fine tannins are all on display here.

About the Producer

"Parador Napa Valley is dedicated to producing Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level of quality, in hopes of gracing the same tables as other inspired wines from around the world. After 18 years in the wine industry, from merchant to wholesaler, I embarked upon a quest to make top quality Tempranillo from Napa Valley. Inspired by wines that have become legends in the Ribera del Duero, such as Vega Sicilia and Pesquera, and create a 'new world' brother to those across continents. This journey started in Spain in March 1998. It was then that I was able to procure Tempranillo cuttings from the Ribera del Duero, propagate those into plantable vines, and have a small vineyard developed for our project here in Napa. Now, after 19 harvests, Parador stands as the only Napa Valley producer still, that makes Tempranillo the focal point of its production!" - Steven Ventrello
