Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hauts Lieux 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 Jeb Dunnuck -
A true "wow" wine, the deep, concentrated 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux (there's 20% Mourvedre) offers awesome notes of blackcurrants, smoked meats, graphite, crushed rocks, and licorice. Extraordinarily concentrated, perfectly balanced, structured, and long, it's another sensational wine from this estate. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 15-20 after that.
96 Wine Spectator -
Intense, featuring a hefty core of dark currant, fig and blackberry confiture flavors, meshed with bittersweet cocoa, smoldering tobacco and warm earth notes. Tarry grip supports the finish, while a mouthwatering garrigue streak drives through. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2022 through 2040. 1,000 cases made, 300 cases imported.
95 Vinous -
Brilliant ruby-red. A highly perfumed bouquet features fresh, mineral-tinged red berry liqueur, lavender and incense scents, and mineral and Asian spice flourishes add complexity. Pliant and seamless on the palate, showing a superb blend of density and energy to the sweet Chambord, cherry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Fine-grained, building tannins give shape to the strikingly long, vibrant finish, which emphatically echoes the red fruit and floral notes.

"A true "wow" wine" - Jeb Dunnuck, 99 pts. This is one you might want to grab QUICK! 2016, of course, is THE vintage to buy and Vieille Julienne is at the top of the heap when it comes to pedigree and quality. The Daumen family has owned the property since 1905 and is one of the most highly respected in the entire appellation. This is SO ripe and purely fruited with a ton of minerality and earthy herbs and perfectly balanced. This is large-scaled with savory undertones that really draw you in but the ripeness is not overbearing, there is just a lot to take in here. It's really hitting its stride now and is sure to improve with minimal cellaring.

About the Producer

Jean-Paul Daumen’s ancestors purchased this domain in 1905. Back then the entire production was sold to negociants. Starting in the 1960’s a small amount of wine was bottled, mostly for family and friends. Jean Paul’s father Maxime Daumen built cellars with new foudres to make and bottle more wine. Over the past decade Jean-Paul has emerged as one of the most compelling winemakers in all of France.
