Louis Michel Chablis Vaudesir Grand Cru 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
This parcel is on the north-facing section of the valley and is a truly stunning wine in 2017. Such fine and fresh, white-peach and lemon-curd aromas with a gently spicy edge. The palate has such purity and weight and beautifully composed and pristine, fleshy fruit, in the white-nectarine spectrum. Exceptional wine. Drink or hold.
94 Vinous -
The 2017 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru is soft, open and quite inviting. This is an especially open-knit, silky grand cru that will drink well essentially upon release. There is lovely palate weight and density, as well as quite a bit more richness that will develop over time - but it would not be a crime to open a bottle young. Dried flowers, orchard fruit and spice come together in this harmonious, approachable Chablis.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Bursting with aromas of white flowers, lilac, fresh peach and orange, the 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is full-bodied, satiny and caressing, with an elegantly fleshy but precise palate and a fragrant, saline finish. This is also showing well and is well worth seeking out.

96-point Grand Cru Chablis from a classic producer, you're going to love this stuff. Louis Michel's parcel of Vaudesir is located in the mid-valley area with chalky limestone/clay soils moving towards a browner clay in the western portion of the parcel. The youngest vines here were planted in the 1970s and the oldest are 70 years old! There is always a pronounced salinity and minerality in this wine with no oak to get in the way of the pure, unadulterated expression of chardonnay. This is extremely approachable and generous in its youth while having the clear ability to increase in complexity with some years in the bottle.

About the Producer

The Michel family has been cultivating their passion for tradition and the Chablis terroir since 1850. In the mid-20th century, the family stopped making wine in wooden barrels in favor of stainless steel tanks to create clean, pure, and precise Chablis without adding artificial woody flavors. Through this philosophy, combined with limited yields inspired by organic wine-growing techniques, the domaine has developed a worldwide reputation for fine winemaking in stainless steel tanks. A firmly-rooted sense of excellence is passed down from generation to generation. Louis Michel & Fils has always been a family business and is managed today by Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel.
