Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94+ Jeb Dunnuck -
As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has a touch more dark fruits, more concentration, and more structure, which makes it less approachable but more age-worthy. Blackcurrants, ground pepper, bouquet garni, crushed rocks, and garrigue notes all emerge from this structured, focused, yet ripe and beautifully textured Chateauneuf Du Pape that's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes starts off with scents of tapenade, then adds ripe cherries and cola notes. Dark and concentrated, it's full-bodied and open-knit, perhaps a bit coarser than the elegant 2016, with a touch of chocolate on the long finish. The Grenache in this cuvée was planted in 1905, making this a relative value among old-vine offerings.
92-93 VInous -
Lurid magenta. Powerful, spice-tinged cherry and blueberry scents show excellent clarity, and a floral element gains strength as the wine opens up. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering densely packed yet lively red and blue fruit preserve, spicecake and floral pastille flavors and a hint of smokiness. Shows superb energy on the broad, long finish, which is framed by velvety tannins and sharpened by a late jolt of spiciness.

An all-time CdP lovers fave, we have an incredible price on this gorgeous old-vine cuvee -- do everything you can to snag some, we don’t have much! Tons of great scores and a nice Cellartracker 92.6 to boot!

Wow! “Incredible QPR”. Yes, the tasters on Cellartracker all say the same thing -- this wine massively overdelivers. And at our price??! This will fly out of here -- a great wine to drink immediately and over the next 5 years!

Clos Saint-Jean farms 100 acres in southern Chateauneuf du Pape and is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. Relatively unknown until Robert Parker fell madly in love with them, now they are among the most collectible in the region. The Vieilles Vignes 2017 is soaring with fruit and the traditional sweet wild herbs (often called “garrigue”), Asian spices, white pepper and raspberry jam...it’s a LOT to wrap your head around, but man is it FUN!

$44.95 and FREE SHIPPING on 4 or more!! Crazy! While it lasts!

About the Producer

Clos Saint-Jean farms 100 acres in southern Chateauneuf du Pape and is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. Releasing 5 Chateauneufs in top vintages, they also produce a wine in collaboration with Sine Qua Non in California's Santa Barbara County, and release another high-end collaboration from Chateauneuf called Chimere. While the winemaking here is often labeled as modern, it is actually relatively traditional, with the Grenache almost always aged in tank and only the Mourvedre and Syrah seeing time in larger, 500-600 liter oak barrels, or demi-muids.
