Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur de Roy Tres Vieilles Vignes 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

91-93 Vinous -
Assembled from several parcels of 80- to 100-year-old vines, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" has an elegant, seductive bouquet of pure raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe sappy red fruit, good structure and very well-integrated new oak toward the finish. This has good potential.
91-93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is also showing very well, bursting with aromas of cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate, smoked meats, licorice and rich loamy soil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and voluminous, with an enveloping core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, lingering finish. This is one cuvée where the better-integrated barrel régime and lighter touch with extraction really make themselves felt, and readers might wish to think of this year's Coeur du Roy as a baby Charmes-Chambertin. As usual, it derives from vines between 50 and 109 years of age located in the lieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais. It was vinified with around 50% whole cluster (10% more than 2017) and matured in 50% new oak (10% less than 2017).
89-91 Burghound -
An equally fresh nose offers up notes ripe cassis, black raspberry, earth and plenty of sauvage nuances. The exceptionally rich and caressing medium-bodied flavors terminate in a dusty, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that makes it clear that this is built-to-age.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
We received just a scant 12 bottles of this legendary wine from the ieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais. Dugat-Py is known for ripe, extracted wines of serious pedigree and ageability and the 2018s take it up to 11.

"Readers might wish to think of this year's Coeur du Roy as a baby Charmes-Chambertin." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Allen Meadows is a long time fan of the property who writes:
"Bernard Dugat's son Loic has now completely taken over the domaine though Bernard continues to help out. The younger Dugat noted that the domaine is now certified as organic though it doesn't represent any change in viticultural philosophy as the domaine has been farmed this way for years. Dugat's thinking is consistent with several other domaines in Burgundy, Leroy among them, that the energy required for the vine to heal the wounds could better be channeled to ripen the fruit. This idea isn't new and it is controversial as some believe that the vine can waste energy by channeling it into shoot development. As I never tire of pointing out, if you like old school wines that are built-to-age, these are for you. In fact, they are so structured that I underscore what I have said in the past: the Dugat-Py wines are constructed for the very long haul. As such, in my view, it is largely pointless to open them young but if you can't resist then be sure to allow them plenty of time in a decanter first."

About the Producer

The Dugat family have been winegrowers in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation since the beginning of the 17th century. Bernard Dugat and his son Loic are the 12th and 13th generation to exploit the unique knowledge of wine-making and working in the vines, which has been acquired over four centuries. Loic has now officially taken over for his father although he helps out from time to time.
