Chateau de la Nerthe Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes 1989 (Magnum 1.5L) - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 1989 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee des Cadettes wasn`t as big a departure from the Burgundies as you would think. Showing complex aromas of smoky, herbed dark fruits, tobacco, dried meats, leather and licorice on the nose; if not for the tobacco and meaty/herb character, this would pass undetected in a blind lineup of mature Burgs. The silky smooth palate was medium bodied with ripe fruit, a layered texture and a long finish. In the middle of its drinking window from Magnum, I would lineup any 750s from drinking over the near term.

About the Producer

One of Chateauneuf-du-Pape oldest estates. Archives affirm Chateau La Nerthe exists as early as 1560, while suggesting an even more distant past dating to the dawn of the region’s wine culture in the 12th century.

The 225 acres of La Nerthe vineyards are located in two single blocks around the castle. The terroir is very typical: the vineyards run along a slope, at the top of which the vines dig their roots into soils of sandy-clay, on the surface there is a layer of the famous "galets", the large, round, well-worn stones that originated in the Alps and were carried down to the Rhone by the ice age glaciers. These large pebbles store the heat during the day and release it at night.
