Another perfect wine from this brilliant estate is the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, which matches the otherworldly 2007. A classic blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah brought up all in old foudre, this beauty's deep purple color is followed by a mammoth bouquet of kirsch liqueur, black currants, blueberries, Asian spices, and garrigue. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it nevertheless is as graceful as a ballerina on the palate and has ultra-fine tannins, a silky, seamless texture, and a finish that just won't quit. Hats off to vigneron Paul-Vincent Avril!"

As good as this tastes on release you might be fooled into thinking this wine won't age well, but ask anyone who has recently tasted the 1989 or 1990 Clos des Papes and they will confirm how good they still drink today.  The 2016 is going to be one of their greatest ever, with the added bonus that you can start drinking it the moment it arrives on your doorstep or sock it away in the cellar for a few decades!

About the Producer

Paul Avril, born in 1873, was one of the people behind the creation of the Chateauneuf appellation. In 1896 he started Clos des Papes. Regis Avril, born in 1901, delivered wines to two presidents of France General de Gaulle and Georges Pompidou. Paul Avril, born in 1937, started working at the domain in 1963 at first together with his father and later for many years with his son. Paul-Vincent Avril attended wine school in Burgundy and when he went back to the domain in 1988 he had visions about finesse and elegance and he still considers these qualities as most important. Today the family works with 24 parcels totaling 79 acres from multiple soils types and is arguably the very best producer of CdP in the world.
