Betz Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Pere de Famille 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2015 Père de Famille is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, and 4% Merlot that's mostly from Red Mountain aged 20 months in 70% new French oak. This inky colored effort is packed and stacked, with deep blackberry and currant fruits intermixed with lots of graphite, crushed rock, and minerals as well as smoky, violets aromas and flavors. This full-bodied beauty has gorgeous purity and elegance. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.
96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille exhibits complex aromas of pencil lead, inky dark fruit, wild blueberries, black truffle, incense and anise. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and very concentrated, with a deep core of sappy fruit, rich structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. This will need some time in the cellar, but it's very complete and full of promise.
95 James Suckling -
Fantastic aromas of blackberry, violet and blueberry. A medium to full body and tight tannins that remain plush and caressing. A flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to come together. Impressive. Try in 2022.
93 Vinous -
(14.5% alcohol; the Cabernet Sauvignon received longer skin contact during fermentation--12 days, or about 50% longer than usual; a blend of Betz's best barrels): Dark ruby-red. Musky currant, blackberry, black cherry, sweet plum and black olive on the nose. A step up in definition and nuance from the Clos de Betz, with its classic Cabernet dark fruit flavors complicated by sexy oak spices from the Taransaud barrels and lifted by a note of black pepper. Boasts a sensual texture with good lift; not a blockbuster like the 2014 version but this may be more complex. This wonderfully supple yet firm wine finishes with creamy, palate-saturating length.

People -- this drinks like a $200 Napa Cabernet, seriously. Normally found in restaurants, mostly, we are blown away to have scored a bit at this sensational price. Don’t miss, Cabernet lovers!

Just a few of the words of praise for this killer ‘15 from Bob Betz, the living legend winemaker behind his eponymous winery. Because this is such a “Bordeaux-like” Cabernet, here is how the man himself describes this wine (another data point for you):

“It’s a deep magenta through to the core. A knockout aroma of black currant and black cherry comes next, enhanced by bay leaf and thyme. Black olive notes share the stage with baking spices. Aromas of white flowers and red currants tease their way out with time in the glass. The palate impression is one of early integration between the oak and grape tannins. The inclusion of Merlot and Petit Verdot help create a seamless texture, and extend the length of flavor on the palate. Expect 2015 Père de Famille to be delicious young, but to offer up to two decades of cellar life.”

This is a dead-serious wine that lovers of Cabernet should be buying by the case at a price like this...Really, trust your wine merchant! We’d love to put this in a blind Bordeaux tasting, oh yes, and encourage you to do exactly that. The price! C’mon! First come, first served…!

PAIRING IDEAS: This makes us think of morels, or any hearty mushroom dish. A slow braise of your meat of choice with morels and a rich sauce...MMM. Perfect.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Rolling Stones! Anything pre-1985 or so really works, although we are partial to "Exile on Main St." generally as a go to. Rock on!
