Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville 2021 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 The Wine Independent -
Deep garnet- purple in color, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville explodes with bombastic notes of crème de cassis, black cherry preserves, and boysenberries giving way to nuances of cedar, graphite, and lavender oil. The full- bodied palate is jam packed with intense black and blue fruit layers supported by a solid line of firm grainy tannins and amazing tension, finishing long and with wonderful purity.
97 James Suckling -
This is full of aromas of lead pencil, black berries and black currants. Deep and dark. Full to medium body, with juicy and layered tannins and a flavorful finish. Very grapey. Precise and focused. Real Coombsville character. Drinkable and will age beautifully.
97 Vinous -
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, offers tons of nuance and Coombsville character. Savory and wonderfully deep, the 2021 captures all the pedigree of this great vintage. Lavender, crushed rocks, graphite and rose petals all run through this fleshy Cabernet Sauvignon.
96+ Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is all varietal that, like all these latest 2021s, was brought up in 50% new French oak. It has more blue fruit as well as a full-bodied, incredibly layered style in its full-bodied aromas and flavors of graphite, scorched earth, tobacco, and obvious minerality. It's a big, concentrated 2021, but it nevertheless holds onto a beautiful sense of freshness and balance, which is what I think sets this vintage apart. As with the La Magdalena, it's not for the instant gratification crowd, since it probably won't hit full maturity until a decade after the vintage, but I'd be shocked if it didn't have 30 years of overall longevity.

With a price drop on two bottles, score this super limited Napa Cab from the great Andy Erickson and a sensational vintage!

We will never tire of Andy Erickson and his amazing wife Annie Favia’s collaborative masterpieces! The man behind so many world-class, coveted, and critically acclaimed wines (Dalla Valle, Marciano, Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Arietta, and many more) released just a few cases of his powerhouse Coombsville Cabernet to us, and sadly, this never sticks around long. The 2021 vintage is flat-out brilliant, scoring 98 points (and multiple 97s and 96s too) and epitomizing all that is great about this growing year and Andy’s prowess...which is to say, a lot!

Famed winemaker Andy Erickson and his wife, viticulturist Annie Favia, built a new sort of partnership with the creation of Favia in 2003. Their goal together is simple, to “create soulful wines that express the true nature of the vineyards from which they come.” With an innate concentration on preserving native plants and local ecology, their team practices a holistic winemaking approach with dry-farmed vineyards, minimal intervention, and gentle handling from field to press.

While we like to pepper offers with our own commentary usually, we cannot find any fault with James Suckling’s assessment...so, here it is! “This is full of aromas of lead pencil, black berries, and black currants. Deep and dark. Full to medium body, with juicy and layered tannins and a flavorful finish. Very grapey. Precise and focused. Real Coombsville character. Drinkable and will age beautifully.” Yes! We concur! All of that! As you know, 2021 was a real grand slam of a year for Napa Valley, producing some of the most gorgeous, balanced, and compelling Cabernet Sauvignons in decades upon decades. Add in steadfast farming, passionate vinification, and a powerhouse team – and, well, you’ve got something truly, irrevocably special.

And this wine. Oh, it’s a beauty! Read all the myriad, skyscraping reviews for the full picture – or just order yourself a few (one for now, some for later, of course). In short, it’s all the silky, brooding, intense dark fruit flavors of black cherry, boysenberry preserves, and black plum compote that leave your mouth watering, with interspersed notes of graphite, crushed granite, dried rose, burnt earth, and bright acidity with gripping tannins. Yes, it’s smooth and sultry and big and alluring – everything you could want in a high-pedigree Napa Cab from a standout year! But as we mentioned, we’ve got only a few coveted cases...so make some of this yours while you still can!

PAIRING IDEAS: Try the spicy Brazilian black bean stew of Feijoada, made with a variety of meats like pork, sausage, and beef, for something hearty and rich alongside this beefy Napa Cab!
